It the truck is already reserved by someone else honestly that's kind of scummy for the dealer to do IMO.
If I was the guy that put down for it and learned my reservation was bumped I'd be pissed.

I would be wondering why the dealer is even making this offer. Perhaps the other customer is paying a lower price than you, or is out-of-state, or has been difficult to deal with etc. Unless the other customer has actually withdrawn interest or his financing fell through etc, I agree the dealership is morally obligated to offer the in-stock vehicle to the other guy. I don't think you as an individual have as much of an ethical dilemma, but personally I would not take it. Who knows what reason the dealer will tell the other guy, and you don't want some irate dude taking it out on you or your truck if he happens to notice you on the road or something.

well for one karma is a B***, but also check it doesn’t have the child seat recall lol! He could be trying to pull a fast one. If you haven’t already checked, do it. He could play both of you. He already told you want you wanted to hear, now he’s going to go tell the other guy, “yeah so we got you into another allocation that doesn’t have the recall so you’ll have that one sooner.” Or I’m just being crazy and over thinking this lol

In the end, the OP is asking the question I believe, because the OP knows it isn't really something he's comfortable with. There's a non-zero chance the person holding the vehicle will not be interested in the vehicle, in which case, jumping on the one that arrives at the dealership seems opportunistic but quite acceptable to pursue.

I'd be very wary of this. From my limited understanding (although the same info has essentially been confirmed by a couple of dealers), when a vehicle is locked by a dealer to a customer via a deposit, supposedly that vehicle *cannot* be pulled by another dealer. So it would seem to me the only way they could "switch" you would be if the other vehicle weren't really sold, or if they were trying to wedge *you* away from your current deal to sell *it* to someone else for more money.

Either way, it sounds really shady to me. Really shady. Proceed with extreme caution.

Has anyone heard any verifiable information indicating any impact the cartel violence in Mexico has had on getting vehicles out of the Toyota plants down there?

Yeah @stftaco youre right that I’m uncomfortable with it because I feel bad for the other guy. I feel like it’s not really my truck because it’s not the vin I’ve been tracking. That person could even be on this forum tracking their truck! Then again if that’s the case, they’ve been doing it for 1 week since it was built and I’m going on 6. I know 6 weeks since the build isnt long compared to others on this thread, but still too long (especially when no trains are involved because I’m in CA).

im paying MSRP plus dealer PPF so I doubt the other guy is paying less than me.

Giving the dealer the benefit of the doubt if it’s a refundable deposit maybe the “possible” part is if the person found something else and asks to back out. My recent experience with dealerships it’s awfully hard to give them the benefit of the doubt.

You’d think they would give context like that to clarify it’s no sure thing and more importantly that they’re not being shady with their customers.

An update, its here! Was originally told Sept but it came off the truck at the dealer this past Friday, my salesman was also surprised because the system still mentioned that it was in Veracruz. Will follow up with what the timeline is , maybe grab a screenshot.

My dealer has told me they've had all kinds of problems with their internal inventory and tracking system, relaying *exactly* what you just did - they get a truck *delivered to the dealership* that the system says is still in Mexico or in transit.

Ethically, seems like kind of a d***move. As the legendary Roy Munson said "You dont mow another guys lawn!" But you dont know if the guy backed out or what...so theres that.

    @Rod03 Congrats again.

I never thought otherwise. :) We are all in a somewhat similar boat. I'm worried a truck promised to me might somehow be given to someone else. It's such a weird situation we have with all these factors affecting inventory. I couldn't even drive the vehicle I was ordering.

Luckily I got to spend a good amount of time in a Limited my brother owns, but this was a month after putting down a deposit.

The dealer I'm working with is pretty good about keeping me up to date on progress, and these stories of the online status not being in sync with actual deliveries to the dealerships... I hope the estimated delivery date is bettered, but who knows? It would be a pleasant surprise though.

I feel it's the fault of the dealership. They could have said, "would you like us to put-down a backup deposit on this one?" Or, "we will reach out to the other buyer, and if he declines the truck, we will offer it to you" - well, that would have been good. Maybe that was their intent? I don't know.

Hope you're in a new ride, as I know all of us hope we all are, as soon as possible. :burnrubber:
