Agreed, but I said that, they didn't. And I was just making an assumption. They basically said, "Yo, if your engine sounds like a shaken can full of marbles, ignore it"

Update. Ive been driving around with premium gas and haven't heard any of the pinging so I think that might have been the issue. Thanks for all the advice!

Welcome to the club. Like I said on my earlier post, 89 fixes it as well on my truck, so to save some money you can alternate fill-ups of 87/93 and it should still be noise free. Unless you like your new expensive truck to sound like an '81 GM anything anyways.

Thats weird, when i tried 89 mid grade the truck didn't seem to run any different than on 87...just costs more. Notable difference being worse on 93 octane. Less power, and the transmission hunted. Even the exhaust tail pipe tip turned all sooty black.

Not really. There's tons of owners here who report the truck running better on higher grade gas. They just get drowned out by the people who have never driven their truck telling us it's a waste of money. Tons and tons of threads and posts about misses, pinging, does issues, etc. while running 87.

Some have trucks that run as advertised. Yours must be one of them. Cherish it.

Makes sense. Could be that your local gas is worse than stated. I know someone who went around town testing fuel octane and found that most are lower than stated. The low grade fuel at the pump is crap in many cases. Mid and hi grade gas is just better. Which is why I never get the lowest level at the pump

Did you run several tanks of 89? or did you just do one fillup and nothing changed? I have been running 91 in my truck and it has definitely made a difference. Not just in performance, which has been noticeable, but in mileage as well. The engine is quiet and smooth. But I did not notice a change until several tank fulls.

And/or some people are less sensitive to small performance changes in their vehicle. I have been in other peoples cars, and the cars were running rough and erratic idle and the owner could not tell the difference until I brought it up.

Black soot is from direct injection and running rich (you can thank Toyota for that). I've noticed Shell gasoline does it more than the others I have used.

Hello. Interesting read on this issue. I have a 2021 TRD sport automatic and also noticed the marble rattling sound when accelerating uphill and on level road at 1000 -1300 RPM (just noticed the sound around 14500km mark) I live in British Columbia Canada and going in for my second service at 16k. Bought the Tacoma brand new. Aside from octane opinions, would this issue be covered under warranty?

When i raced bikes we'd find the fuel out in certain regions of the country not up to the same performance here in the northeast. Regular sucked...imo it was stale. Idk if its still the same but sure seems it. Upper mid west was the worst.

He's describing pinging. It's in the manual. It's not really an issue, but I find it annoying when my '17 does it as well. 89 or above makes that go away too.

Mine makes a rattleish sound when accelerating uphill and when letting off after accelerating uphill. It only happens sometimes though

Just had this happen yesterday for the first time. Both times goin up a hill. Maybe from summer blend gas? Never in the 4 years I’ve had it.

if they explained every small, questionable detail, like this, the owners manual will be 7 inches thick

I wonder if there has been a new version of the software for the remainder of the gen 3s? My truck was one of the very last to come out of the factory in Baja, and it still allows for a mild detonation "rattle" upon shifting under power sometimes. Based on what I've read here, I am definitely going to try higher octane but really hoping for a fix, as even Costco premium is over $5.

I wonder if this is happening to everyone, but nobody notices this teeny tiny sound. I worry that if its not fixed, this could damage the engine over time. I rushed to buy one of the last few of the old gen 3 models before they were gone because I want tried and true. I want this to be a 300,000 mile truck.

This is a video of the kind of sound, but from a different car (and much worse). Fast forward to 2:45: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JA0cH_vRABg

Get a phone based obd2 app like fusion and obd2 BT adapter (Google fusion thread on tw). You will be able to see if you have a knock issue.
The only fix is is to get a tune. Tunes fixed the issue with the pinging, especially on 87 octane.

Hey TW, so I have the exact same issue currently going on. 18 tacoma 6spd manual 82k on the clock. First noticed it in 2nd & 3rd gear between 2800 and 3428 rpm (scangauge ii helped narrow that one down). But recently I've heard it in almost every gear under moderate driving. It never happens under WOT and i can recreate it if I get into it until about 4k then let the RPM's fall to about 3500 before holding slight pressure on the accelerator. I've done the 91 trick, new plugs and coils, thicker engine oil ( was worried I may have spun a bearing) nothing has helped. Today for the first time I heard it for seconds when starting up after an 8 hour shift. IM STUMPED. It sounds like maybe a belt tensioner or a water pump, however I pulled the belt and checked for crunchy bearings in both. Any other suggestions? I don't really want to take it in just to hear that it's nothing to worry about. I will also add, i cannot recreate it when the truck is in neutral. Only when driving.

Taco V6 is known to have diesel sound when parked, its the cleaning mode to keep carbon down. Not sure about while driving though, maybe try to record a video and if you can sound that would be great
