This is how people end up in land cruisers. Tread carefully.

    Doing alright here.

Lots of crazy stuff happening at work. My boss got the go ahead from our VP to move me up to an engineering manager position. We’re growing fast, so he wants me to stand up a brand new group of engineers and techs basically from scratch. I accepted, but now the real work starts…

I do have leadership and management experience, but I’m also desperately wanting to not fuck this up. The good thing, along with the salary bump, is that my boss knows that I’m a fierce advocate for my people and he’s not trying to give me any ‘company first’ bullshit. I see my job as making sure that I get good people in the door, I do my best to keep them happy and challenged, and I keep as much BS off of them as possible.

So if y’all have any management advice, horrible stories about what NOT to do as a leader, resources, etc., let me know. I want to kick ass, but the imposter syndrome is strong some days

As a not manager who has had both good and bad bosses, here's what i've seen that separates them -

    - Bad bosses -
    - micromanaging
    - ambiguous direction
    - reversing decisions made by employees on a whim, even though said employees spent a considerable amount of time making said decisions
    - little to no feedback
    - outright refusal to make any sort of a plan

    - Good Bosses -
    - trusts the employees under them
    - advocates for the group to the larger business, has a plain to maintain said group
    - provides clear direction
    - provides constructive and regular feed back (we have bimonthly performance reviews)
    - goals for the year are set by the employee with guidance from manager and collaboratively with manager
    - performance is carefully evalulated numerically, with evidence (he even collects attaboy emails we receive)
    - will go to bat for the employees under them when outside pressures try to get them to do too much or do things that are nonsensical.

I also find that the interview process is important. I had an interview with my future boss, and a panel interview with 3 of my future coworkers. 90% of the second interview was just to make sure I was a good culture fit and could answer the technical questions they had.

    4 run, 2 don't
In-laws arrive today, and we'll be heading over to see them later.

Some have mentioned my, being belligerent but my in-laws say what I said to the family was well-deserved.

Also, did all my paperwork (first day at the new job today) and will be doing forklift certification training after lunch.

    Outstanding. Thanks!

I want to go back and parse this further later, but I’m pretty much in complete agreement. Thanks again for the well thought out response!

Fuck yea, congratulations man! That's an awesome step up

I don't thing my experience of managing grunts in a lawnmower shop would be useful for you

But my favorite saying to end every argument where they wanted to get lippy was "I'm not here to sing kumbaya with you fucks"

Yea there's definitely things I can get away with saying that would send you (in your new position) to HR

Maybe a preemptive sign like this is what you need? :laughing:thumb_observe-engineers-in-their-natural-habitat-please-do-not-tap-64529697.jpg

Pretty sure my parents got diabetus when they were my age now. I only drink the cola a couple times a week and little to no sweets. I usually check out ok every 5 years when I go to the doctor.
