Question about off-road light size

Help me out here willya?

If the wattage of the bulbs are the same and the beam patterns are nominally the same, what is the advantage of a physically larger light?

if your looking at the hella 500 and 700 they are both halfway decent, I would advise upgrading the bulbs in them to HID's. worth every penny. Got mine from DDM tuning for like 30 bucks

It is about what you want to spend... bigger lights and newer technology costs more than smaller lights and older technology.

If you have the bucks, HID or LED is the way to go... you can spend from $120 to $1,200 per light fixture.

The first 'off road' lights were aircraft landing lights... then KC marketed them for off road use and racing... a sealed beam that drew lots of watts.

The next advance in lighting was halogen... and is still used today. 55-130 watts typical.

The next advance was H.I.D. (xenon) and with 35 watts produce more light than 130 watt halogens do, at a color that is closer to true daylight.

The newest advance is L.E.D. and they can be grouped in clusters or along bars.

Here are my off road lights... the most I could afford...

2 Hella 4000 8" 100 watt Halogen Pencil Beams in the middle and 2 Kragen HID 7" 35 watt Euro (driving) Beams on the outsides:

 

Thanks for the replies. Scollins' link and quote gave me what I was looking for. Right now, I have a pair of Hella 500 FF's mounted in my bull bar but one of the lenses is cracked so I'm trying to get an education on lighting before I replace them.
