They only do that if your have no friends and travel solo. Anywhere in a convoy, other than lead truck, they make it 10000X worse. Terrible in fact. I couldn’t believe the amount of dust coming out of the air boxes of the snorkeled trucks. Putting a snorkel on your truck seriously risks dusting your engine.

What? Isn't the desert intake designed to fix that problem? I'd assume it's so high up it'll "breathe in" less of the dirt kicked up by the lead truck.

Wait, I thought snorkels were to protect against 5g?

    Hmmm, that does make sense.

Without a dorkel, air enters through that wheel well, so definitely less dust gets in there. Dorkel is exposed to all that dust. I’m usually never the first truck in our convoy so I know exactly how much dust there could be. It’s so thick sometimes you can’t see shit.

No. All the dust kicked off the road goes right in the snorkel. Unless you have one with a proper centrifugal filter cap on it, it makes the dust ingestion far worse than the stock location, even the TRD Dorkel. They are a fashion accessory at best. If you remove your fender liners to run 35” tires you kinda need one, as then the intake is exposed, so those guys get a pass.

If you watch a truck with a snorkel following you on a dusty road you can actually see the dust getting sucked into the snorkel if you watch closely.

TRD Snorkels actually transmit 5G. The receivers are hidden behind the carharrt logos on those beanies that all the overlanding crowd wear. That’s why they always turn their caps so the logo is dead center of their friggen forehead. Then their brain receives the clearest instructions from headquarters.

No, you need a precleaner on it to separate out the sand, just the normal snorkel end collects dust and stuff this is what a precleaner from a real desert air intake looks like.

I always liked those 2019 and 2020 Pros with the TRD desert intake, I thought they were actually functional and reduce dust load for the intake and hence prolong engine life.
I'm glad I didn't get duped into buying one with that and no wonder Toyota decided to discontinue them.

Ya, it makes a "dead zone" in the airflow, like the space under your air filter (were all the dusk collects if you have a normal snorkel) and the sand falls out of the air flow.

Deserts are dusty. Why would you think something that intakes desert air is cleaner? It's literally in the name. Desert air.

I use an silicon wafer fab air intake

Interesting. I cant possibly imagine neglecting your truck bad enough to let it get that dirty. Even just knocking the filter out against the tire should be enough.

I can tell you no codes were set when I did this, but I did notice a massive drop in power, as you'd expect. :anonymous:

Also, not to stir the pot but this is a stock intake. No snorkel and inner fender liner still in place. Not 100% sure I agree with the statement that the stock location would be any less dusty.

I run a corn popper snorkel head on my Land Cruiser. The swirling balls knock the dust out of the air.
