I decided I'm just putting this thing back together. Skipping the timing belt replacement for now. Timing belt isn't due and really I'd like to see it running well for a while before possibly causing myself more expense. Should get a few more years of driving before timing belt is actually scheduled.

Yeah I'd for gotten its been so many years......on my first 3rz ....I just used the starter bump method....
piece of cake......and I didnt even have a helper......breaker bar zip tied to a frame member....its really very easy, its just a couple slow bumps with the starter....easily controllable.....
And scared shitlless too about using it......

Boy.....all those memories.......the thrilll of victory.......and the quick retreats.....
like my rear axle seals.......yeah, timmy says 'not so quick, there's a problem...'

Did that when doing my brother's Lexus ES300 timing belt job - but what sucks was not only being scared of doing it on someone else's vehicle but when it didn't work! LOL. We had exhausted all our other options, homemade welded tools, breaker bars, pneumatic impact - nothing would work. We wrapped it back up for another day and waited for the beefy socket to come in the mail. That sucker whizzed it right off with the air impact.

Mine gets most things off, if it doesn't come off its because I used an extension, if I remove the extension and it still doesn't come off its because the socket broke.

When you go in there with timing belt.....arent you suppose to replace everything so pray u dont have to go back....

I'm talkin tension pulleys, and maybe water pump.....not a 5vz person so dont know what else.....

As far that big ass socket.....I've never come close......the heat has always won.....
especially when combined with decent impact blows......even to the point of shattering both sides of threads (seized torsion bar bolt).......

And this is what they made that freeze off stuff for.....

I broke my breaker bar trying to use the starter bump. The pins holding the end piece broke.

I ended up making a tool, took me only about 1/2 hr and was lucky to have parts on hand. All you really need is some steel bar stock, drill a hole at the end large enough to get the 1/2" extension through. Two more holes for the appropriate bolts to fit in the balancer and jam nut those bolts onto the bar. The spacing on the bolts is some even std number like 4" - dont recall for sure. This will only work with a fairly shallow socket though, the bar must be flush as possible to the balancer.

My floor jack handle fits over a breaker bar but if yours does not get some steel pipe.

One time doing this before I made the tool I gave up and sprayed the bolt with penetrant overnight and it seemed to work as next day it came off without any special tool but I think that's the exception - but cant hurt.
