    Congrats!

    +1 to everything @0xDEADBEEF said.

The biggest thing I want from a manager is actual, meaningful, giving-a-damn goals and feedback. Most managers I've had have left me to self-manage. I can function under those conditions, but it's not motivating for me. It's easy to eye-roll at HR-mandated reviews and development plans, but they're actually great tools if everyone takes them seriously. That means figuring out what your employees care about, encouraging them to pursue those things, and checking in regularly to see that they're keeping up with what they said they wanted to do. If they aren't, talk to them about it.

Do everything with the mindset: "Let's prepare you for your next job, whatever that might be." If the next job isn't with you/your company, then so be it... you can't hold employees hostage.

I had a brief stint managing folks at a past gig, and a few of my reports told me later (after we all got new jobs) that I was the best manager they'd had simply because I took the time to point out things they could do better. It's a low bar, but lots of managers miss it.

Do 360 reviews (invite your employees to review you).

Don't cheap out on equipment or expenses (if you have the authority). Encourage your employees to frugal, but remember that an $800 monitor is a fraction of the employee's salary+benefits and if it helps them do better work than a $200 monitor then it's money well spent.

Don't assume everybody works the same way you do, or takes feedback and criticism the same way you do. Don't assume that someone who isn't responding to your feedback is lazy, incompetent, or malicious. Assume that every personnel problem is a communication problem, and that you are 50% of that communication. (Some people might actually be lazy incompetent, or malicious... but odds are it's not that simple). If you like books, The Culture Map (https://www.amazon.com/Culture-Map-Breaking-Invisible-Boundaries/dp/1610392507/) is a decent one on cultural communication barriers.

I forget... are you in software? If so, Extreme Programming Explained (https://www.amazon.com/Extreme-Programming-Explained-Embrace-Change/dp/0321278658) is my favorite on software process. Most other literature on Agile development are rehashing its ideas (granted with some improvements and additional info... but I still think XP explains it better than most). I also like to give junior devs a copy of The Pragmatic Programmer (https://www.amazon.com/Pragmatic-Programmer-Journeyman-Master/dp/020161622X/). Every dev should read that at least once.

Well, hoping to get an X-ray done this week for my back; doctor believes it could be more serious so not taking chances. This one's through the VA.

Wife sent me a list of chiropractors in our network, so hoping to schedule something soon. This one's through our health insurance.

Double coverage sure is beneficial, so I'm hoping to get the second opinion I need and see if the VA will add this as a service-connected rating or not.

Time to go back to my old thread posted awhile back.
