Your sticker thing sounds like what we used to do to each other on backpacking trips.

It started out with hiding rocks in each other packs.

At some point it escalated to bricks.

With a rock you can just dump it on the ground. But with a brick you have to carry it because leaving it in the ground in the wilderness would be littering.

 

Anyone done deer valley in their 3rd gen?

 

I'm a 1st Gen, but what are you looking to find out? We just did Deer Valley a few weeks ago, and I regularly wheel with 2nd and 3rd Gens.

 

Would it be difficult doing it on a 3rd gen with 33s and sliders?

 

Difficulty on Deer Valley really depends on direction your traveling.
From Blue Lake to Highway 4 is predominantly down hill, so it's much easier.

That said, I would definitely say going from 4 to Blue Lake is more fun.

The 2 most major obstacles on the trail are within a couple miles of the Highway 4 side trail head. Going down them would definitely make them easier. I was on 33s with a front locker(going up) (my rear locker was malfunctioning). I had to winch the second obstacle. (Longer wheel base would have made the obstacle harder, not easier).

As for the rest of the trail. It's 8 miles of cobbles, with some medium sized boulders in the mix. I used my sliders quite a few times, and my skids, a LOT. It's not "hard" per se. but it's relentless for long stretches.


33s with sliders and skids is doable. If going up, I'd have a winch just in case, or at least someone with you with a winch. Lockers make it easier, but wouldn't be a deal breaker if you don't have them.

 

Thanks for the info. So if I were to go there, would my truck make it out the same way it went in?

 

Deer Valley is a through trail, you'd go from 88 to hwy 4, unless you turn around. What's the hardest trail you've done so far?

 

Deer Valley is point to point.

You either go in on the Blue Lake side or the Highway 4 side. You could go in and come out in the same spot, but that would mean you are doing the whole trail 1 way and then coming back the other way.

I've done part of the Rubicon coming from the Tahoe side and making it about 90% of the way to the observation point

Probably, the gate keeper on the Highway 4 side (you can literally see it from the beginning of the trail going up) and a rutted out section (pretty much right where the trail bends hard to the right on the map) are really the only spots I'd think you could really take "damage." There is one other spot further up the trail that is pretty tore up, not really sure where I would point to on the map for that. Wrong line on that could give you problems getting up, not sure I'd really look at it as a spot where any damage is "likely."

That picture right there looks a lot like Deer Valley for the most part. Only, maybe, a bunch more soccer ball cobbles to make it more annoying than that picture looks.

 

Thing about Deer Valley is a lot of people will tell you it's just a fire road for the top 3/4 of the trail (Blue Lake side)

It's not.

It's A LOT more annoying than a fire road from beginning to end. I've only done it once, and I wish I had had a better idea of what it was when I did it. It's not "hard." But it just beats your ass for about the entire 8 miles. I kept thinking we're almost through it, it should let up in just a bit. It didn't. It's a bitch pretty much until you either see the Lake (top) or Hermit Valley campground (bottom).


Now... our group was also dragging a 3/4 ton 1976 Chevy Long bed on 35s with a broke power steering pump and a fuel system that was vapor locking (literally) every quarter to half mile, where we had to wait 10-15 minutes every quarter to half mile, so the truck would run again... 10 hours it took to do that shit... so maybe I'm letting that cloud my judgement of the trail a little bit.

 

Just make sure you drive fast enough.
Remember the faster you drive the less time there is to damage your truck.

I know you're rig. You can make it up Deer Valley.

From the picture @20tacosr5 would make it up too.

There would be a chance of winching though, with no lockers. The gate keeper and that second area is pretty hammered. (second area is more hammered)
