Im sure its been done before, but how hard would it be to swap a i4 to a v6, and would i need a new transmission?

Very hard and not worth it….. trade for the V6 if that is what you want. The electronics (ECU, wiring harness), exhaust, radiator, and everything else that remotely touches the old engine will have to be changed out. You would have to buy a wrecked V6 Tacoma just for the donor parts. And no one will buy it at trade in time.

this isn’t swapping out an inline six for a small block in a 68 Nova

    Hard?
Yes for most, unless you are good at fabrication.

    Transmission?
Yes new one will be needed along with the proper mounts. Same for the engine.

    I agree.
    This is the unfortunate truth.
The easiest and cheapest way is to buy a V6 truck.

It would be far easier to add some forced induction to your 4 banger. Totally changes the drivability of the truck

    +1 to that.

Or if you are going about the time and energy for a swap, just LS swap it.

Man that's a tough one! See if you can find an entire V6 truck at a junk yard to swipe all the mounts and parts from might be your best option

I made a sarcastic remark about someone that wanted to swap his 2.7L for a 4.0L.

Sorry to tap into this thread very late, but I am considering engine swapping my 2016 SR5 i4 at 75k miles to a v6. I found a motor and trans for $2500 from a 2017 with 85k miles. I am thinking it would be a summer project.
Currently my 4banger is tuned by KDMaxx and sits on 285’s, not regeared yet. My mechanic who’s swapped his tacoma recommend a Derale Transmission E-Fan to replace the stock mechanic fan which robs hp and torque but i am risking reliability. paying off my truck at the end of the year, it’s my first. not really looking into buying a new 3rd gen or the 4th.

I’m from Socal so I can’t get the URD supercharger or turbo the truck without having to do a third party smog. :/ limited to the v6 swap. IMG_1638.jpg
