The 1GR found in the 2nd gen Taco was only used in larger body on frame trucks/SUV's from 2002+. Not "cars" and not the 90's lmao.

Depends on what you define as a "real truck engine". I would say that the 1GR motor was only found on larger body on frame vehicles, trucks & true SUV's (not unibody crossovers) and not found on a single car like a sedan or anything with a unibody for that matter.

I personally would define it as an engine that is only used on body on frame vehicles. You know the 3.5 2GR-FKS motor in the 3rd gen taco is also found in a Toyota Camry right? The 4.0 was made as a body on frame "truck" engine with low down torque, they didn't put it in a single unibody for a reason....

Ok. IMHO “a proper truck” engine is one that makes peak torque 1200-1500 rpms or so. Just like 1990 Chevy 454 4 spd I drove, now that’s a truck engine, even though it was used in cars. Or of course any diesel in full size trucks for example.

1GR makes peak torque at 4K and peak HP at 5600K! How can anyone call that a “proper truck” engine is beyond me. Yes, it was never used in cars, I get that.

It’s a good engine no question about it, just like most Toyota engines. Curious to see how the 2GR will fair in the long run, 200k miles. I’m planing to keep it beyond that so that will be interesting.

 

Your ignorance about towing is showing that you clearly don't understand a torque curve. Try pulling a 5k lb boat up an incline ramp from a dig in the 4.0 vs 3.5 and you will learn very quickly why "real truck motors" have low down torque. Once you get going it will be fine, the starting and stopping in the 4.0 while towing is a noticeable difference.
