Remember when

We did that... no actual "rocket" involved. Just a piece of a coat hanger with a hook bent on one end. Put the hook into the top end of the Estes engine, and cut the M80 fuse short and tuck it in there too. Secure everything together with a piece of tape. Use it like a giant bottle rocket. Depending on the delay that was meant for the parachute... sometimes the M80 went off on somebody's roof..

 

Do kids even have paper routes anymore?

You needed a work permit to qualify for one (New York used to have two - different colors - depending on your (teen) age) back when I had one. Hell, you needed the permit for ANY job as a minor.

 

Does anyone read newspapers anymore?

 

my dad does.. wall street journal every morning.

Used to buy the Sunday paper for the sports section and coupons for the wife.

I worked doing building maintainence in college, one building was the owners of quite a few other properties and the family was a little odd. They used to hang up the front page of the WSJ in the restrooms. I called it the Wall Street Urinal

Reminds me of one of my local gin mills used to put the sports stats pages up in the men's room above the urinal... Before the age of the smart phone, at least you could read last night's scores / stats without having to wait for SportsCenter on the bar's TVs.

We do. We had stopped having the paper delivered a number of years ago because it was arriving too late, after we had left for work. After retiring several years ago we started the subscription again. Now since the China Virus shutdowns we got a dog... and he absolutely LOVES running out to get the paper in the morning. He started that 10 days after we got him in September 2020. Now if the paper doesn't come for some reason it completely ruins his day. Also, when we visit my 91 year old dad about once a week we bring him the prior 2 or 3 days of newspapers. He really enjoys reading them too.

 

You really should be saying, "Remember newspapers?"

 

Permit? I grew up in Brooklyn. We were a bunch of ten year olds and none of us had a permit. We got a bill at the end of the week for papers and whatever was left over was yours. Kept track of collections in a little green book. I do remember having to get "Working Papers" when I got a job at Macdonalds when I was 16.

I had a paper route. I remember how pissed off I'd get when you had to collect the $2 each month and you knew people were home (cause you'd see the curtains move) but they wouldn't come to the door to pay the kid that brought them their paper.

I also had a paper route, started working at 13, 2 jobs by 15 1/2 and 3 jobs by 18. Fuck California, now I have 8 jobs.

 

I remember the "work wars", despite being in a state they're banned.
