Honestly? I believe many are very reliable these days, but for me- the cost of that little dinky hole that does nothing but let noise in, isn't worth the risk of labor intensive repairs. One of my buddies has been a Honda tech for nearly 30 years, he sent numerous pics over, and they are nightmare. He thinks the same as I do, overall they almost never break, but risk isn't worth it for him either.
My GF loves the damn thing, leaves the forken cover open all the time so the interior is even hotter than the surface of the sun and bitches when I drive he 4R cause the first thing I do is close that silly ass thing.

Many moons ago I bought my wife a new Camry. She absolutely wanted one with a sunroof so I got her one. If I recall it was like an extra Grand for that fucking hole in the roof.

She used it once and said she didn't like the sound of the wind above her head and never used it again. I swore I would never buy another vehicle with a sunroof and I meant it.

I love mine but I dread the labor-intensive nightmare if it ever breaks down, not to mention the idea of it leaking. Hate when I forget to close the cover, especially when you combine hot southeast summers with black leather.

My Celica's sunroof still works, but the cover itself is a 50/50 split, meaning instead of one piece, there are two sections that sort of stack onto each other because the fixed roof portion is so short. It always jams up halfway. It doesn't bug me enough to remove the entire headliner and start chasing parts on a car that's no longer made. Maybe someday...

The Celica was actually made and assembled in Japan though so of course it still works, lol.

Same here with well over 100k+ miles as well. My wife had a Celica GTS for years that had no problems and I have owned 2 RSX type-S's that also never had a problem. Of course those were all assembled in Japan so YMMV

That's good to hear. "Dread" might be a strong word... That's why I think OP's issue was a freak accident/assembly line fuckup, which is why it's SO disappointing that the dealership is treating them this way.

    Oh look, another mod....
I love the sunroof on my truck. I've driven it through the drive thru car wash a few dozen times, and had zero issues with it.

Sometimes, I like to open it up, stick my head out and do this:

"They build em better in Japan" and hey, like I said it's only the sliding cover that doesn't reveal the whole glass. It still opens up to allow the sliding part to fully open. So... whatever. I love the car. It's a shame you don't see many of them these days.

Hind sight is 20/20 and we are all blessed with it. The second he said "honey" should have set off bells and at that point you should have proceeded to tear a strip out of him and asked to see his boss . The guy obviously doesn't think too highly of women and needs to be taken down a few notches. Take it to another dealer and take one of your mean looking big man friends with you. Good luck with your warranty work. I find it hard to believe that there is that much wiring and such in the roof to justify $7 k worth of repairs.

    I don't believe you...

you only opened the roof 100 times in 6 years or 100k! lol Opened my 11k mile tacoma roof more than that in one year.

Clearly lots of mistakes were made since late 2015 when all these i*diots bought them and drove them to the mall or overlanding.

I know what you mean, the same 2GR-FKS motor is found in a Camry.

A bit late now, but that right there is where I would have ripped him a new a-hole - hopefully while other customers are around to hear you call him out for being a sexist pig.

I hate to say this, but unfortunately shops will often try to take advantage of women. Men too but less often. Next time you talk with them, be firm but polite and tell them you expect it to be fixed under the bumper to bumper warranty and that sunroofs don't normally fail like this unless faulty. If they give you any flak, ask for names of not just the person you are dealing with but the service manager, owner, etc. so that you can file a complaint with corporate. Maybe try a different dealer as well.

I really want to make a comment about the scam that service departments are now just charging you a shit ton of money to “diagnose” the problem. Especially for something that is under factory warranty.

Toyota outsources builds to other countries because it’s CHEAP. And let’s not be fooling ourselves that build quality in the USA and Mexico is anything close to Japan.

They're crazy to think an automatic carwash will cause that damage.
