Engine oil temp

Mine doesn't have a cooler, the propose of this thread was to see how big a difference it made, the engine oil cooler is the block with the tubes coming out on the left side of the filter housing in the pick in post 24. mine doesn't have that as it has no tow package.

I switch to mine once in a while and I'm at 186 - 200'ish fully warmed up. As Tony said, it mirrors coolant temp very closely since there is no actual temp sensor.

Edit: looking at xgauge site, you need to have v4.22 or higher on your SG. It really sounds like there's a translation issue in yours if it's that off coolant temps.

 

Just to throw a little bit more confusion everyone's way. Toyota runs the coolant about 10 degrees hotter than the norm in the 2GRFKS.... of course this causes the oil to run hotter, and that is by design. Someone will have to pull data before and after, but the oil cooler may (?) well create slightly warmer oil temps under light and normal driving.

An electronically controlled thermostat sub-assembly is used. This thermostat heats the heater element in the thermostat sub-assembly according to signals from the ECM in order to heat the wax and open the valve of the thermostat sub-assembly.

When the ECM determines that the engine is under a high load based on the engine operation and load conditions according to signals from various sensors, current is supplied to the heater element in the thermostat sub-assembly in order to open the valve of the thermostat. Therefore, it ensures the fuel economy by RAISING THE OIL TEMPERATURE and reducing the friction when the vehicle is on light duty. It also achieves lower water temperature that assists opening a vent by heating the wax inside the thermostat while the vehicle is on heavy duty.

OP, the coolant feed lines for the tow pack oil cooler have crazy routing and are a PITA to remove install.

BTW, I didn't realized that you don't have the Tow Package. I was thinking that you wanted an additional cooler beyond the one from the Tow Package. In that case, I would say that it would be a good idea to add the Tow Package cooler if you are towing significant loads often.

Do you have an engine oil cooler? I do not, I believe this is the reason mine is higher.

 

Took a look at my temps on the way home from work last night, It was 65* outside air and my temps were 245-255. In the middle of the day its been 90* here and I've been getting 260-280*.

 

there is no actual sensor for the oil temperature so your best bet is to get an infrared thermometer and measure the oil pan or the oil through the cap. the calculated temps aren't necessarily accurate.

 

Was just gonna route some heater hose to the cooler unit and fab up some aluminum support, doesn't look to tough.

 

Have that, also need 4.22 for trans temp and current gear, don't have a problem reading either of those.

 

That's very weird. Maybe just triple check you got the MTH, TXD and all the other hex values are exactly right. Maybe find someone with or get Techstream so you can double check what's being reported by SG. Something is definitely off if you're seeing temps that high when warmed up. Hope you get it figured out though.

 

I do have the V6 with tow package but as far as I know, the only additional 'external' coolers it comes with are:

- Transmission oil cooler
- Steering fluid cooler
- *Oil filter cooler/heater

The oil cooler/warmer is part of the oil filter assembly and should stay relatively same. Not sure how much of a difference it would make if you didn't have one on yours but I can't see how that little heat exchanger makes a 40-60 degree difference especially when we know there isn't an oil temp sensor

 

ya, really need someone to chime in who doesn't have the cooler to support/disprove my temps to see if somethings up, gonna check the scan gauge program later. Fluid type heat exchangers can be quite efficient for there size though.

 

With my cooler and all my other temps besides trq converter they run about 185°F to 200°F

 

that's the coolant temp, not oil temp

 

what is what in my gauges…my oil temp stays at 194 as well and will fluctuate up to 201 or so during towing. I’ve never had any temps of any fluids get above 233

so you are saying that “Oil” is some other oil? Coolant is under a separate option when I add the gauge, and “Oil” came from a unique option as well

 

it uses an algorithm to estimate the oil temp. use an infrared thermometer on the oil if you want an accurate measurement.

like i said, there is no oil temp. sensor in the engine.
