I just got a call from the dealer on a recall for frame rust .....

Toyota has received reports regarding frame corrosion perforation on 2011 - 2017 model year Tacoma vehicles. In these reports, customers have indicated that vehicles operated in specific cold climate areas with high road salt usage may exhibit more-than-normal corrosion to the vehicle's frame. This condition is unrelated to and separate from normal surface rust which is commonly found on metallic surfaces after some years of usage and/or exposure to the environment.
Remedy
Any authorized Toyota dealer in the Cold Climate States (CCS) will first inspect the condition of the vehicle's frame under associated Customer Support Program (CSP) ZKA. Based upon the results and date of the inspection, the dealership will do one of the following: If qualifying rust perforation is not found, and the vehicle is located in a Cold Climate State, the dealer will apply Corrosion Resistant Compound (CRC) and/or install frame plugs to key areas of the vehicle's frame FREE OF CHARGE to the owner under Limited Service Campaign (LSC) K0D. If qualifying rust perforation is not found, and the vehicle is not located in a Cold Climate State, no further action is required. If significant rust perforation is found, the dealer will replace the vehicle's frame FREE OF CHARGE to the owner under Customer Support Program ZKA if all conditions of the program are met.

I had mine done last year. You have to do it to maintain the extended frame warranty.

 

I have an app for next week to have them check it out.

 

The frame Limited Service Campaign is technically not a "recall", as you noted in your body text. Recalls have very specific legal requirements that I'm sure Toyota were eager to avoid (although I give them kudos for stepping up to do what they've done.)

I had the corrosion resistant coating applied to my first Tacoma (a 2001 DC). I regret that. The coating, at least in the past time, was a soft unpigmented waxy stuff for the interior cavities -- all good there -- and a black pigmented more rubberized coating for the exterior surfaces. I don't like that kind. On my Gen 1 over the next five or eight years it seemed to harden more than I liked, and to crack and pull away from the frame in a few places. I expected those spots were MORE likely to have corrosion problems than having done nothing.

Check to see what they're doing now and then make your decision.

For my current (and forever) Gen 1, and for my Gen 2, it's Fluid Film once or twice a year.

The process and the coating in this program are completely different. I would still recommend Fluid Film, Woolwax or better yet, Waxoyl to protect the rest of the frame though. This new process only coats the insides of the boxed sections of the frame.

 

That sounds like an improvement over the Gen 1 program. Better.

 

I just had my recall done a month ago. I waited a couple weeks to make sure the process had cured and then coated the entire underside with cosmoline rp342 I have used this on 5 vehicles now and love how it protects my undercarriage

 

How long did it take them to do this im not sure if I should wait or get a ride and drop it off

 

Rubberized coatings are never good, this is what they tend to do. Stick to oil based undercoats.

It's usually a few days. You will get a free loaner car.

 

I just got a notice that says the campaign has been extended until Oct 2023

 

So I rust check my own vehicles. If your truck is rust free, do they still spray this stuff or say you’re doing a good job and send you in w your way?

 

If your in a rust state they still require the spray to maintain the frame warranty.

 

Even if your frame is in perfect shape and your own choice of corrosion protection, you still need to have a dealer inspect and coat you frame to get the 12 year frame warranty. Trust me, just do it.

my truck was from Louisiana and here is a picture of the frame after my first coat of rp342. It’s an amber color but look at the bolts. They did the crc on mine because I’m in Indiana

well at least it looks like Toyota is using a better product now. The stuff I saw them spray on some 2nd gens years ago was complete garbage and likely made the frame rust faster but not show the rust until it was out of warranty (the product would dry and harden and rust from behind)

I have a 5 month old 2022 so I have a few years before I have to deal with this nonsense. Toyota really should be doing better.

 

I just went out to look under my 2022 and it has the plastic block off pieces where the frame transitions from boxed to open C channel. Seems as though the newer Tacoma's have the plugs/block off plate from the factory. Hard to tell if anything was sprayed inside this area as I have it coated in rust check. It does look like a similar white paste was applied in this area to the Crc I found videos of online.

 

I called another local dealership today and asked about this again and got the same answer as before from a different dealership. Once it’s applied that’s all we do, it’s not a yearly thing. Both did tell me the truck was done this past January, so why are they telling me it’s not yearly?

 

The dealers telling you it's a one time application and not yearly is correct.
