Have TRD 2WD w/ Locking Diff - how much confidence in Mud should I have?

Have an '06 TRD Off-Road DC with locking differential and brand new 265/70/16 Hankook Dynapro's. (which I friggin' love, they are sick looking on a stock rim/suspension) I know i'm missing out on steering control without 4WD but with the locking diff and new Dynapro AT's, should I feel relatively secure in muddy, yet relatively level ground with a limestone rock Texas hill country base?

I've been in some pretty sloppy mud with my Dunlop radials and made it thru the weekend hog hunt, but am prepping for spring rains & dirt roads. With some liquid courage I'm seeking some more confidence in my "Off-Road" vehicle.

You should be full of confidence. You're a smart attractive individual with a bright future and lots of friends to help pull your 2 wheel drive truck out of the mud and let you borrow their sand ladders.

 

Reality check here:
Prerunner with Rear locked== 2 wheels spinning
4x4 with open diff== 2 wheels spinning
I hate to be an ass but Prerunners do suprisingly well when you think you need 4wd. yes things can get deep enough to need 4wd i'm just saying that prerunners are better than people assume.
I have had 3 previous tacos with 4wd and now i have a prerunner. i have no regrets.

 

Your inexperience is showing.

Say your truck is.. round number, 10 feet long.. and a mud pit is 20 feet long.
To a 4x4 you're only in the mud for 10 feet... a 2 wheel drive is in it for full 20. PLOWING the front wheels through the mud with little or no steering capability and definitely no chance to find purchase on the side of a hill or rock to help pull you out. Mud and sand suck for any wheeled vehicle, but you're better off (clearance and tread aside) in a front wheel drive CRV going through the mud by a hell of a lot. Hell of a lot.

Now if you're just looking to make your truck muddy like a redneck child, sure, you can splash mud around. If you run into a section of road that is rutted out mud, forget about it. You'll slide right into the worst of it and stay there. Lots of 4x4s will get stuck in that, the only advantages a 2 wheel drive truck has is, it won't get too far and will be easier to recover.


In the non Off road model the lsd and "locker" bits don't work in 4x4? If so, eh.. still worlds better, If they do, man. Not even worth a discussion. Its school time.

 

It's all about momentum, only disadvantage is, not being able to take advantage of engine weight (since you only have 2wd) and if your front wheels are out, but backs are still in... you still won't get traction.

Still pretty capable, I just wouldn't go out alone, but I don't do that even with 4wd.

 

it sounds like the op is just talkin about some "light" muddy not going into deep ass mud pits that would obviously require 4wd. so no i'm not speaking out of inexperience, i'm talking about what he is describing as off roading, thats all man. mudding isnt the same to everybody
i'm not saying that 4wd isn't better i'm just saying that for the prerunner is capable of a little mudding.

 

Absolutely. The tire type comes into play as well, if they self clean well, or if they are stock street type tires...

 

REGARDLESS OF CAPABILITY.. it's not a 2nd gen issue. Its a general chat issue.

Not trying to insult you. But at the same time. You can get stuck on wet grass in a 2 wheel drive truck. I've done it. Seriously.
Rear wheel drive and slippery conditions are not good bedfellows.

Yea, to me, mudding is getting to the dry stuff on the other side.

For clarification.. this is mud

That stuff squiges into your trans brake and up through the floor boards. You have to ride in the ruts, cause putting one wheel on the hard stuff will just get you stuck on your side. And getting stuck on your side means you're spending days walking back through the same stuff that stuck your truck if you can't get the engine running (we always had PTO driven capstans back on those things no electric winch)

 

I'm 4wd locked front and rear and I dont go out alone.
