Class 1 to 6 most are auto. Have been for years. The trend right now for these classes is Hybrid drive systems.

Class 7 and 8 tractors, are mostly manual. There are auto shift manuals... but they are all mostly manuals. There aren't automatic transmissions made that can handle this weight class.

Its all about working smarter not harder. Why would you need to shift gears if you don't have to?

Been wheeling and driving manuals for 9 years, and my Tacoma is my first auto. Freaking love it both on and offroad. Cant beat the control offroad.

Nothing more “fun” than feathering the clutch for 30-45 minutes a day while you inch along at 3 mph.

I had to LOL because I've said it's better to have a stick shift with a sports car...

I hope that didn't get translated into what I highlighted up top.

We all have preferences and reading through these replies, it's great to see everyone's reasoning.

Once it starts turning into a one-sided opinion, I have to skim past those comments and get to the better part of the discussion.

Application & Preference play key in the decision-making process.

Thanks for the discussion to all.

EDIT: Same applies to Short/Long Bed.

Sequential transmission shifts much faster than MT.

    MT is a dead technology.

Because automatics, regardless of manufacturer, are often in the wrong freakin' gear for the specific scenario one is about to encounter.

Nobody is arguing that. It’s just boring as hell.

I would get more joy out of driving a 5spd 1985 vw scirocco then let’s say 2020 AMG 600SL mercedes.

Sorry, no, sequential shift transmissions often get totally hosed up when you need to drop two or three gears in one shot; that plus with a real honest to God clutch pedal, the driver can modulate how hard or how soft they want the engagement.

I would pay big money if I could buy back my 1979 5-Speed Scirocco.

None of this matters when they can't drive one.
