Dude, it's NOT repainted. I can't believe people are still pushing this narrative especially if they read the whole thread. Same thing happened to me in the exact place and I explained, in this thread, what I did and what I saw. At least a few others had the same problem in the exact same place. So all these people had their hoods repainted? Isn't it more feasible that water got trapped in that area from behind and created the rust? Fer krips sake!!

Hate to say it but the dealership knows it was repainted that’s why they won’t help you, so they’re just pushing you elsewhere.

Is there another dealership nearby that you can take your truck too? These guys suck. Also, might be a good idea to call/email corporate as well to see if they give the same answer that the current dealer is giving you.

Ya there is another one that is somewhat close. I've never dealt with them before, but it seems like the one I currently go to is the preferred one of the 2 (from talking with friends.) The one I went to today I have gone to with my last truck for everything, along with this one. I would try up there though, if I had to. I was also considering sending an email to Toyota directly. I would like to at least hear back from the place that the dealer sent me to. I just want to hear him out on everything. If somehow I can have him look at it and bargain with the dealer on a discount hood, then I am ok with that. I understand that the truck is technically out of warranty. So if we can meet in the middle, I would be ok with it. I'll be happy as long as I don't have to pay the full amount. And really I don't think I want to bother with a repair/repaint, as I just wouldn't trust it and I wouldn't want to risk it not looking right. I'd rather just put that money towards a new hood, especially if I could get a Sport hood (which I sort of like better.)

Dude, why you getting all worked up? This is an open forum with everyone’s collective knowledge trying to figure things out with our trucks.

No one can says DEFINATIVELY if it’s original or if it’s been repainted except the original owner.

Talk to corporate and another dealer. That may not be perforated now but soon will be if it started from the inside as it appears. Technically not out of warranty (perforation) and should be covered.

I'm not worked up at all, it's just seemed like it was fairly clear what was going on after my post and others cross-posting threads to posts with the same problem. Just didn't understand the need to riddle the thread any further with false speculation. There's A LOT of that on here. Just glad the OP got a resolution. I will be calling my dealer too and will reference the outcomes from at least 2 people I've read on here who had the issue covered under warranty.

So ignoring everyone who keeps saying its been repainted. Doesnt matter either way. The rust there is coming from the seem under the seem sealer (underside of the hood) This is usually caused when water/salt gets into the hood and pools up near that pinch weld. It rusts from the inside out and is from that area not being sealed from the factory.

It is 100% a factory defect when the parts are made and has nothing to do with a repaint.

Im hoping that they put a new hood on there for you, and if they do the first thing you need to do is to spray fluid film into all the drain holes in the front seem of the hood and get that area good and covered. This is what I did when I first got my truck.

Thanks for the response. Funny part is, the dealer echoed a lot of what you said. But they also said that "it would be hard to prove that it was a defect from the factory." And since it was no longer bumper to bumper warranty, there isn't much they can do. But I agree, I will be careful to fluid film once I get this resolved.

this is the EXACT REASON you put some sort of corrosion inhibitor on the front, sides, and rear hood seams, as soon as you get a new vehicle. same goes for lower doors, bottom of tail gate. $35-50k trucks and people dont take the time effort or spend the money to protect that investment. they used to say it in advertisements years ago, you can pay me now, or pay me later. the latter will be WAAAAAY MORE EXPENSIVE, in this case. sorry the OP is going through this. People told me the same thing when my white paint peeled.

I think there are people on this forum who believe toyotas are always perfect so therefore any problem must be either imaginary or due to neglect/abuse/improper repairs etc.

I think most people are looking at the picture posted on the first page, there are rock chips that are still body color leading people to believe it was painted over. But the rock chips are just that, rock chips that only went through the clear coat and not all the way to bare metal.

I was always taught that paint bubbling came from mold or moisture in the air. Do you live by the coast ? If so Do you leave your car out at night or garage it?

That is caused by rust forming under the paint. Nothing to do with mold.

Ok so another update. Went down to have my truck looked at by the dealer collision/body place. Again, confirmed there was no repainting or tampering with the hood, paint etc. So he wrote up an estimate and I had to take it back up to the dealer. Upon seeing that, the dealer decided to work with me and submit it to Toyota. Ultimately they will decide if it will be fully replaced under warranty. If Toyota doesn't cover it completely then the dealer is going to discount the hood and labor for me to have the hood replaced. So essentially, I am happy with the outcome regardless. That's all I wanted. So hopefully it's fully covered, but if not, I was happy with the deal that we came to to have it done, if there is no help from corporate. Sorry to disappoint all the "experts" that said it was in a crash or something that I did (or did not do) to the truck. So if anyone else is having a similar issue, hopefully you can have them cover it, even if you are out of your bumper to bumper.

Also, regardless of which scenario, I asked if I can have a Sport/scoop hood as the replacement. That was not an issue. In both cases, I basically have to pay the $200 out of pocket for the extra couple trim parts that goes with it, as that was not included in either deal. So I am cool with that, as that is completely understandable.

    Thanks for those who helped.
