Manual or automatic?

This. Drives me batty. My auto frontier (bought because I couldn’t find a manual and I badly needed something) was no joke in top gear (5th) at 33 mph. 1100 rpm. If you pressed the throttle to like 50% it would finally downshift to 4th at 1300-1400 rpm, TC unlocked. Then you’d have to do it again to get it to go to 3rd where it actually had enough power to move. It was ridiculous. I don’t know how people are able to choose that and be happy vs doing a bit of arm and leg work.

I don’t hate the idea of an auto, if they didn’t suck so much in the real world I wouldn’t mind one so much. But as long as they are trying to tickle the EPA’s fancy by hanging out in top gear as much as possible, I want nothing to do with them.

Yeah, been there at the border sitting in a long line for an hour waiting to go through customs while these guys take their time searching cars. Glad my tundra had an automatic.

Switching gears manually is like grabbing your girls hair and yanking it while driving her.

Automatic does the job like missionary does but sometimes you wish you had that wild reverse cowgirl that needs her hair to be pulled in gear.

 

My brother had an 81 scirocco, auto, Thing shook like an alcoholic in the morning. He put dry gas in the tank and fucked up the sending unit so any cloverleaf and low tank of gas, meant lots of sputtering and coasting.

 

Manual or automatic?

I highly, highly recommend whichever one you don't have.

I drove nothing but standard vehicles for decades( Jeeps mainly) . The older i get and my job changing and requiring me to travel a lot more plus my former life in the artillery pretty much destroyed my knees and feet so i like my automatics now. I bought the Tacoma 5 years ago this November and its nice not having to screw with gearing and a clutch in the traffic i have to contend with at times.

 

Green with bronze wheels works on so many levels! Bravo.

 

When I test drove this truck, manual. I was like ugh. This is terrible. But I had been driving a little gti, so the transmission was way different , not to mention the brakes.

 

I found the problem.

 

My road has a hill at a stop sign that is steeper than most boat ramps I am pretty sure all Tacoma MT's have brake assist (holds brakes for 2 sec till you accelerate) so the boat ramp is a no issue even for a beginner IMO,... because if you can't start up a hill with brake assist in a MT you should not be in a MT anyway.

One post mentioned 5 different truck brands and types of builds for towing we are in a Tacoma forum STAY WITH IT MAN.
Towing in a AT vs MT,.... ask a transmission mechanics view. Because the non-slip answer is the correct one.

Get the MT because you will never have the opportunity again after 2023..... unless it's a used vehicle.
After this decision you can buy all the AT's you want for the rest of your life.

The off-road and pro manuals don’t have that hill hold feature. Don’t know why, it’s a different brake system.

 

That’s really a bad omission.
