Easily Add wireless Android Auto to your 2020+ in 15 minutes

Background: 2021 Tacoma stock head unit with JBL; Samsung S22U

I bought the first Google certified device made for USB to add wireless Android Auto, but didn't like how it hung from the stock dash USB port. Decided to try and find a way to relocate the USB, but found something even better.

The Motorola MA1 wireless adapter ($90) + cable ($10) from AliExpress allowed a plug and play, no cutting, 15 minute install to have completely hidden wireless Android Auto implementation that works great!

Step 1: Pull off panel around head unit. https://youtu.be/47sf5G8ZsnI?t=21
Step 2: Take out 4 * 10mm bolts from radio
Step 3: Unplug stock USB port and plug in AliExpress cable



Step 4: Fish the other end of the cable down the dash. I ran it down the drivers side so I can pull it from behind the panel if problems happen. It has been working perfect for about a week which is nice.
Step 5: Plug in Motorola MA1
Step 6: Tuck it behind a panel to hide
Step 7: Put everything back together

That's it put everything back together and enjoy wireless AA. I would setup the Motorola before you unplug the stock USB plug because the plug will be disconnected with the new AliExpress cable.

Total about $100, 15 minutes of time, and easily reversible. AA starts in abut 30 seconds after starting truck. I use the Qi charging for the phone if a long trip because wireless AA uses a bit more battery.

I had to replay the video a couple of times.

 

I been using the carsifi wireless AA adapter for a few weeks. I’d like to hide it too it uses a usb c cable though. I think I’m going to just get a right angle short cable and tape it to the underside of the dash.

I really like the carsifi but it was a kick starter item I ordered in December for February delivery but it didn’t arrive until mid April. I would recommend it but not with the potential wait it might have.

This is one "mod" I simply don't get the demand for. My phones have always gotten the bulk of their daily charging during my commute. Bonus for "free" electricity.

is there a way to add netflix and other apps to android auto?

Just to be clear this is not for driving but say sitting parked or on a ferry.

 

No you would need a plain Android headset.

 

The one benefit I can see is that I have a cig lighter charger that is way faster than the head unit USB plug, so could be useful on shorter drives.

 

less wires, cleaner look, don't have to take phone out of pocket if it has a good charge already, I have a phone holder and I hate the wire hanging down my kid always knocks it.

first world problems for sure but hey to each their own.

 

So this only works with JBL head unit? I had to watch her multiple times to try an see. I looked really, really close each and every time. Kept getting distracted.
