Wow, this is beyond crazy. Did they seriously try to pass off a secretary as a corporate Toyota rep? And have they never heard of the internet and what can be learned with just a few clicks of a mouse? No more benefit of the doubt now, I would unload on these people. And I also would not let my truck spend another night there.

Good luck OP and very sorry this is happening to you

It might be worth it to speak to a service manager at another local dealer and get there feedback on your situation. You're going to need another dealer to work with in the future even if this somehow gets resolved at the current dealer because you are not going to want to do business with them in the future.

Even if it takes months to get the parts, the rest of the Tacoma should be put back in running order (minus the sunroof) to use until the parts are ready. This isn't the motor, or a transmission, the sunroof could be manually put back together in a closed position. This dealer is literally holding your truck hostage. If you have the time to wait out the response from corporate, you should. If not, you may need to pay the $375 just to move on.

Thanks! That's Mas! hull number 138. Photo was taken mid-gybe in the Ditch Run that never happened (2020). Mark and I raced Mas to Hawaii in 2016, great boats.

Absolute waste of time. Write them a shitty yelp review instead.

    HOWEVER.. DON'T DO ANYTHING YET.

wait until it's resolved or the situation is beyond saving.

@Cricket-0 You haven't said what state you are in.
If state laws allow start recording every interaction with the dealer without announcing it to them.
If state laws don't allow "single party recording" tell them they are being recorded when you talk to them.

    This is ridiculous.
I can't even imagine how stressful this must be.

I'd have concern with them screwing with your vehicle. I'd almost be inclined to pay the $375 to get it out of their shop ... use a credit card and decline the charge?

    They are criminals.

    Time to kick ass.

I would be contacting Toyota corp, an attorney, and having a chat with the Attorney General for your state. Oh, and I would also consider the local TV news consumer affairs reporter.

    What dealership is this?

Where have you been for the last 2.5 years???

Covidouche is a well known phenomenon known to afflict those relegated to selling vehicles at MSRP+ due to lack of vehicles to sell. It’s a transient infection, but the symptoms take years to resolve.

You’re best off just giving them your favorite finger wave and keeping your social distancing current.

At this point the dealership owes you a new truck. I understand parts shortages and honest mistakes but you were lied to. No question that this is a warranty repair. You paid for a working sunroof, it failed soon after you bought it. The warranty booklet says bumper to bumper for 3 years or 36k miles. I don’t believe that you did something stupid to cause it to fail.

I have a feeling that you are not the first customer they are pulling this scam on. I bet they would love for you to pay for this repair out of pocket and get Toyota to pay for the repair under warranty…. Double billing

you have been more than patient. I think that I would tell them not to touch the truck but let them keep it until this is sorted out. They are responsible for the condition the truck is in now. And remind them because the sunroof is open they will have to park it in a service bay to keep the interior dry until they get their crap together.

this is a warranty repair. This dealer’s service department is pulling a scam…. Guaranteed

It took you 8 minutes to think up a 7 word response with the same sentiment that has been repeated ad nauseam for 6 pages?
There’s so much chest thumping and repetition in this thread as people fall over themselves in a rush to rephrase what the 10 posts before them said.

Definitely a good suggestion. If you have an AMEX card, they offer some of the best customer service. This is where you're documentation and records of interactions with the dealership comes in handy. Include detailed specifics in your correspondence with AMEX such as dates, names, and "titles".
If nothing else, the dealer will have to spend a good amount of time responding to AMEX, and if they don't, your dispute stands.
But do get your truck out of there - whatever it takes.

It should be pointed out that the dealer, once they were outed by the op for their shenanigans, immediately called corporate. Undoubtedly they framed op as a problematic, delusional never satisfied customer who is making claims of a conspiracy against her to deny a warranty claim.

After hearing what this dealership is doing to op so far would you doubt they wouldn't be doing the same with Toyota?

This dealer tried to take advantage of op because they thought they saw an easy target, a woman who wouldn't know any better. With the lengths they went to its most likely their standard MO. I'd bet a little digging will turn up a bunch of complaints against this dealer.

OP should absolutely contact Toyota. She should describe in detail her experience with this dealer, she should not accept how she has been treated.
