Maybe some people want something to store items in that can't be bypassed with a screwdriver.

Tuffy Security Products makes a locking cover for behind the rear seat (drivers side). Lots of room there.

Lol like what? The only item being discussed is a handgun and I was just asking someone who had one when they actually kept there’s in there or rather needed to. So far from your response all I can see is that you don’t.

What facility: Any facility that happens to display the correct legal placards that prohibit legal carry. It doesn’t matter if I need to go in for 5 minutes or 5 hours. If I can’t take it in, the weapon is secured. It’s just responsible ownership. Yes, the odds of theft are low, but I don’t want to be filing paperwork.

As for ‘if I know I am going there’, that doesn’t always work. Have you never been out running errands or just exploring the town and decided on a random ‘oh, let’s check that out’?

Lockerdown also makes a long gun version for behind the rear seats. I think you have to remove some plastic cladding though. Not cheap though.

Honestly no I haven’t. If I did I just wouldn’t explore there but I’m not criticizing or saying it’s a bad idea. Extra security for your guns is never a bad idea I was just honestly curious as I have carried for a couple decades now and have never been in a situation that I would use it. It’s either on me or in the safe at home with the rest. No third option. I thought the topic was interesting though so I wondered when others might use them. I think maybe lime greens wife made fun of his or something though. He seems pretty salty about the subject.

Just covering my bases. Perhaps I would pass rather than lock it up. Perhaps I would skip and come back later. Or maybe I don’t want to make a return trip and I just lock it up. If I choose to carry, then I just want the options to not be limited. And I definitely don’t want to be ‘that guy’ that ignored the signs and got tagged.

Depending on the state, and a bunch of other factors, a lot of the time you can't legally carry inside a place that serves alcohol. So I will carry on my person, until I get to said establishment, lock my firearm in a safe in my vehicle, enjoy my meal or drinks or whatever, and when I return to my vehicle I'll take my firearm out of my safe and return it to on my person. This can be dozens of other types of situations (schools, federal buildings including Post Offices, etc.)

Yeah I can definitely see where that could come in handy. I’m fortunate enough to live somewhere that doesn’t have those restrictions so it comes up so rarely I don’t really have to worry about it. I carry because I love guns but I’m not a paranoid person so if I have to go to my kids school or whatever I don’t have a problem leaving it at home. I have never accidentally had to go somewhere I couldn’t take it and can’t even remember the last time I went to the post office but if my state had more regulations like that I might find a use for one. The guys that really blow me away are the ones that bring they cars in for service and leave there pistol stuck in the door pocket. The other technicians give me shit sometimes because of how much it bothers me but it just seems so incredibly irresponsible.

I agree that if you are going to keep a gun in your truck a safe of some kind is definitely worth having. I just didn’t know when that would ever really come up but I appreciate your response.

It’s incredible that you are so focused that you never once left the house carrying out of habit when you had plans to go somewhere where carrying wasn’t legal, and that your days are so structured and rigid that you would never once have a want or need to unexpectedly enter an establishment where you can’t carry, and you left the house with your pistol.

When I first thought about carrying, the scenario of, oops I have my pistol but need to go somewhere I can’t have it was one of my first thoughts. What if I’m out of the house and my kid needs an emergency pickup from school? A vehicle safe seems like a no brainer.

Yowza... sorry to make this a gun thread with the 1911 info!

    Hahahaha!

Anyway, I have a love/hate relationship with the safe. If you want anything inside the truck that can not simply be smash and grab, then it rocks the shit. Otherwise it's just meh.....

Earlier I was talking to my older sister and she had a smash and grab happen on her Civic Sport, went through the rear passenger window. Didn't get much, but the glass was backordered. She said that she put her purse under the seat, but the strap may have been visible. At any rate, she had to get a new DL, cancel/replace a CC and DC.

Console safe could have been a save in this. Or maybe the perp would just take the fucking car... then what? Yeah.

I am in this exact circumstance (Virginia). Typically we’re taking about a day; go to store/mall, run some errands etc. then stop for dinner before going home. I can carry 3/4 of the day to include while in transit. I want to mitigate the risk for that hour or so I cannot carry.

This is exactly the situation here in FL. Say you are out running errands, and one of the places you have to stop is the post office. You don't want to run afoul of state or federal carry prohibitions. Your choices are to leave the weapon home for your entire outing or secure it in your vehicle while you're in the post office. Want to have a quick bite in the bar section of a restaurant? Can't carry. There are trips where yes, you should probably just leave it home to avoid the prohibition, like attending your local city council meeting or going to see a sporting event at your local school. But as others have said, if the weapon isn't on your person, it needs to be securely stored.

The console is made for accessible storage.
A gun safe is a gun safe.
You only lock down the gun if you are not carrying or need to keep it where you left it.

I have a cable around the seat frame gun safe large enough to hold 1 full size pistol 3 mags and a 50 RD box of ammo.
It slides under the seat from the rear (as under the front has no access due to body design)
You can easily pull the safe and return it from the driver's seat by reaching behind you.

You are either placing the pistol securely where you can access it, or you carry it while traveling.
If you need to safely store the weapon the option is there.

I know of 10 major brands of these safes on the market, and you can store anything in the safe it does not have to be a firearm.

Do not allow a company to tell you how to protect yourself or your property,
they have their interest in mind not yours..... $$$

And no....... cutting a quality cable is not happening with a common tool from Home Depot,
If you can..... you bought the wrong brand,... shop wisely,... not on Amazonian or fleabay.

Not a wise thing to do.... trying to save money while looking for quality and security,... but its your life

Bunch of thoughts - love the Lock’er Down Extreme. Plenty of room for my Glock 30S, extra mags, radar detector and expensive sunglasses.
Pistol normally is in a horsehide pocket holster tucked between seat and console when driving. Fits in cargo pants / shorts just fine.
It is not just government facilities where gun can’t go. I don’t take it swimming.
I live alone with a large dog. I always leave home armed. Too much road rage out there, too many burglary cases due to bad economy and increased drug addiction so I stay responsible for my own safety. We all have choices as to risk assessment and how best to mitigate it. I found the console safe to be a great addition to my truck.

Well since the topic has been broached, I'll just add this useless opinion:. The biggest risk of theft comes from someone seeing where you store the gun.

    :crapstorm:

I can't tell you how many times I've walked across a parking lot and there's a dude in his truck, driver's door wide open, and he's not hiding the fact that he's stashing his piece. Center console, under the seat, glovebox... Watched one mental giant hang his holster on the gearshift.

It's a good thing I'm not a gun thief, because I'd have so many guns by now, easily. I almost guarantee that the rash of vehicle gun thefts comes from someone sitting in the parking lot and watching who is shuffling in their seat before exiting their vehicle. It's obvious, and I'm not even looking for it.

Lesson being gents, when you go to stash your carry, at least have the self awareness that you are sitting in a glass greenhouse, take just one damn second to scope your surroundings and verify that no one is watching.

Yep, like maybe even start stashing before you pull into the lot.
