Remains to be seen I bought the tires and wheels the rest came along
50 Ton press , Mill and Lathe , lug crimping tool, magnetic drill and all the assorted welding tools .

Where do you draw the line??

I think the best tool is my experience.

Being able to make most any special tools

It all depends just what you plan to get into doing.

If you have a 4x4 your going to eventually need a shop press......or a shop you can trust.....
last couple days there is another thread on shops that screwed front bearings up.....
OP had to go back and redo em.....

These trucks are so old....there is no advantage to buying one of the many hundreds of dollar ones.....
And the bluedriver updates on reg basis.....without dropping the old ones.....because its an app on your phone.....

You can drive around with live data running and see everything thats going on inside your engine in real time.......at idle, and highway speed.....

Not mechanical but for doing electrical diag I would say the incandescent test light is the most used tool in my tool drawer next to my scanner.

    4 run, 2 don't
I see a puller, separator, c clamp, etc all being mentioned.

Rather than buy all those things separately, I recommend anyone doing work on their own vehicle(s) to buy an OTC front end kit.

    It'll have everything you need.

JIS screwdrivers! Maybe not "special" but certainly underrated and I feel like not many people think to get a set.

I'm the only special tool necessary. Man, I used a pickle fork once. Grinded it, widened the inside and I can't remember what the hell I used it for.

OTC puller kit and a press sleeve kit are nice to have on hand.

Any time I replace the wiper blades, I remove the metal inserts in them. I've used that metal to create all sorts of little tools to help with various things. Picks, scrapers, hooks, etc.. And when you're not working on the truck, you can turn that same metal into lock pick tools.

I use the hell out of a pitman arm puller and my trans jack. Trans jack is useful for skids and all kinds of stuff, not just transmissions. Other than that the Tacoma requires very minimal speciality tools outside a metric socket and box end wrench set.
