Added a USB port to my DMM yesterday, similar to others in this thread but went with a single port for my use case.

That’s real slick. Installed mine yesterday but might remove it to add something like this. Any links?

    Thanks!

This is the USB connector I used.

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B078LMBQM6

It is run behind the head unit and down towards the driver foot area. It is connected to this 3 foot cable

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B08FJ8VY6P

Which is connected to this power outlet with a standard cigarette lighter USB adapter in it. Which is tapped into the fuse panel power outlet fuse with a fuse tap.

Any combination of items like these should do the trick.

This is the post where I got my inspiration.

    Here are some more pics

Figment testing, used a step bit to drill the holes in the DMM. Drilled the dash plastic with it removed after determining the placement.

    PXL_20220803_214049016.MP.jpg PXL_20220803_214138098.MP.jpg

Tapped into the fuse panel with an add a fuse and added a meso fuse cover. There is a ground screw nearby, I used the factory ring terminal on the Noco power outlet to connect to that but didn't take a picture. I removed the ring terminal for the positive lead along with the inline fuse and connected it to the add a fuse then heat shrinked the connection and wrapped the cable.

    Ran the cables like this

    PXL_20220819_200849264.jpg PXL_20220819_200853064.jpg

Connected to the power outlet fastened to an existing harness tucked out of the way but still accessible. I plan to swap put the cigarette adapter with a quick charge one. This is just the one I had riding in my center console.

I think it was this one. I had a handful lying around and some spare fuses, but this will do the trick. The fuses under the dash are micro type but I used the mini. Used the existing outlet fuse which is 15amps and added a 15 amp for the tap

Did you need the 6' USB port plus a 3' extension, or did you buy the 3' port and extension?

I bought the 3 foot + a 3 foot extension. You could get away with just a 6 foot and no extension if you wanted, but I wanted to be able to remove the screen bezel completely if I wanted and not need to fish the length of the cable out all the way. For me the two cables meet and are tucked away behind the climate/4wd/start controls

You only really need about 3.5 to reach the fuse panel, but I just used what I could find. Would have been nice if the one I mounted on the dash was just 1 foot

ah, didn't even think about making it easier to remove the bezel, thank you.

I ran my carplay/android auto port to the center console. Could easily put it behind the dash if desired.

Back when I looked into doing this I could only find the cable I needed on ali express but now you can get it off Amazon.

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00XKUVJQG

This plugs directly into the head unit where the existing cable is and gives you a female USB A that you can then work with on your plan.

This leaves the USB on the dash inoperable, but with a different cable I got on Ali express I turned it into a quick charge only.

What cable did you use to turn the original usb port into a fast charging port? I currently have the usb port/cable tucked behind the head unit with an extension to pop up behind the DMM. Would love to reclaim the empty usb port down below.

I used this cable, found on Ali express but you may be able to find elsewhere.

    https://m.aliexpress.us/item/2255801133109171.html

If you look closely you can see how it works. The cable linked in the post above connects directly to the head unit, this means you disconnected a cable to plug that in. The cable you disconnected runs to that port on the dash. That old cable has the same terminal as the replacement. This new cable has a female terminal that mates with the male terminal of the OEM cable.

I connected this to the port on my dash then ran it to a cigarette lighter adapter tapped into the power outlet fuse by the driver fuse panel for quick charging. The rest of the setup is explained above in post 1406

I'm trying to wrap my head around this and I think I understand correctly:

head unit --> new cable --> new application.

    old plug/port disabled

Sounds like other folks have pushed through the old jack, and placed a blank or other project in place, thereby allowing CarPlay to only work with the new routed cable application (for me I'm routing it to the top for the Taco Garage DMM). Questions: what are some other options (I think you alluded to it but I'm not totally clear how you made the old port functional yet) for the stock port/plug? Has anyone been able to make either port switchable as the CarPlay port (new cable up top as mentioned) and the stock unit (doubtful)? What's the consensus-- just making the stock port a charge port? (Bonus: where was that thread someone had about rearranging the plugs and switches in a 'better order'?) Thanks!

From the factory the head unit and USB port on the dash are connected by a roughly 12 inch cable. I disconnected that cable from the head unit but left the other end in the USB port on the dash. Then I bought 2 cables, call them cable X and Y. If you look closely at the cables, both have one end as a female USB A and the other end is a proprietary connector.

    Cable X
    https://www.aliexpress.us/item/4000904194171.html

Cable X is a few feet long, and the grey connector plugs right into the port I unplugged from the head unit that previously went to the USB on the dash.

    Cable Y
    https://www.aliexpress.us/item/4001319423923.html

Cable Y is under one foot long and the grey connector is the same port as what exists on the back of the head unit (you could connect both grey ports of X and Y as they are mates.) This allowed me to connect the cable that was still connected to the USB on the dash to cable Y.

At this point now both the head unit and the USB on the dash are connected to cables that terminate in female USB A leaving your options open.

For my use case I ran the cable from the head unit > cable X > to a longer USB cable into the center console where I have an old phone with a cracked screen that lives there with a few gigs of music, offline maps, and a data only SIM.

The USB on the dash is run from the dash > cable Y > to a longer USB cable > 12v adapter port > fuse panel. This turns it to charge only quick charge port in my use case. While I was at it I added a USB to the DMM which is what the post at the top of this page was about. It runs to the same 12v adapter by the fuse panel.

As far as USB switching goes I do not know, it could be possible but I have not pursued it.
