I recently installed the K&N cold air intake on my 2022 SR5 4x4. It actually improved my MPG by 2 on the highway and even better around town. I cant really say if it improved performance mainly because I didnt drive the truck long enough with the OEM intake to really know. Now it did make it sound great which is really noticeable when put your foot to the floor which of course ruins that improved MPG it gave me.
I want to know if the TRD Performance Intake does as well as the K&N has on my truck. Does it sound as good? If I put it on my truck will it improve my MPG, make it worse or return it to the stock ratios? I really like the look of the TRD kit alot but im curious if it will work as well.
I also wonder if I had blocked off the resonator box on the stock intake would it sound like the K&N does but I doubt anyone can answer that

The only thing you accomplished was changed the exhaust tone. You likely lost low end torque, so you hurt real world performance. And considering how long you didn't drive the truck before you installed it, you didn't gain any mpg either, the engine is still just breaking in.

The open-air filters perform much worse than the stock enclosed air filter CAI box.

Not trying to rain on your parade, but put your stock stuff back on. You’ll get better filtration from an OEM or Wix filter than a K&N can provide. You already had a cold air intake designed to work well with your engine.

I will admit, I do like the look of the Pro filter box lid.

I went with the regular ole 63

I drove it for 1500 miles before I added the CAI. 5 days a week I make an 80 mile round trip and I was getting a consistent 19.2-19.5 mpg. After the CAI i get a consistent 21.5-22.5. Now this is with cruise set at 72mph which is not a great speed for gas savings in the Tacoma, at least from the little ive seen. Friday I tried the trip back at 55 and was averaging over 23 mpg but that was just that one 40 mile trip back so will have to do a bit more traveling at that speed to see. Kind of hard to set cruise to 55 to save gas when you just want to get home but im retired so time ive got

That is a shrouded open air filter, not enclosed in a box like the efficient OEM intake system that uses the Tundra V8 air filter.

Had it for awhile. Difference in sound and mileage negligible! Maybe I’m used to it?lol

Same thing I did. About $80 or so if you forego the pretty red box and tubes, same "working" parts.

Really? I just assumed it wouldn’t fit the standard air box.

It will fit the lower air box, but I believe the intake tube/couplers are a different size... oddly enough, the TRD lid has a smaller outlet than the stock lid :notsure:

Not sure if the stock coupler can be used on the TRD lid but I'm guessing it'll be too big for the lid outlet.

That’s awesome to know. Is the standard air filter still compatible?

Yup! Since the TRD filters are oiled (not gonna open that can of worms here) a lot of owners use the OE filter or a dry element replacement. Other than the pretty red lettering, the TRD is larger so it provides a bit more volume versus the OE stock lid.
