We think he’s mostly American Bulldog.

    Either way, 100% doofus.

Got the jacket at the local pet store. But I also had to pay a tailor $25 to expand the Velcro part that goes across his chest

So, what did you do on this beautiful Sunday?

I notice my local junkyard, Littleton U Pull and Pay, has a 2001 Tacoma in the yard. They don't always have a first gen available. Usually, they are picked clean, but I thought I'd check it out anyway to see if there are any worthwhile front suspension / drivetrian trail spares I could swipe. If there are some, I wanted to practice removing stuff without looking at the directions and see if my tool bag has the right tools.

I arrived, paid my $2 entry fee and walked to the wreck. The 4 cylinder engine was out and disassembled, interior picked clean, the bed was gone, rear axle housing was there but the third member was pulled.
    IMG_4111.jpg

A complete driveshaft was sitting there for me. Could this be a good spare? Unfortunately, no. Upon further inspection, someone took a circular saw to the frame and overshot creating three cuts into the shaft. The double cardan joint seems very tight and choppy when rotated. Oh well.

The front ADD style diff was intact. Could this be a 4.56? Yep, code on the tag on the driver's door jamb says A/TM B04A. I may switch from 4.10 to 4.56 one day but not today.
    IMG_4112.jpg

The tie rods were intact so I started pulling those when a guy stopped by needing some help separating an upper ball joint. I keep a in my tool bag, so we headed over to his wreck. When the tool had a decent amount of pressure on the ball joint, I grabbed the BFH and warned the guy that these ball joints can be loud. A light tap and BANG! - made him jump. He asked if I was OK and I said, yep.

I returned to the Tacoma and started pulling the CV axle. It went smoothly until the last step when pulling it from the diff tube, I got past the C ring and slid it out about an inch when it stopped. I could not slide the CV out the rest of the way because the frame was bent so that it interfered with the axle removal. Oh well.

I had all the necessary tools and know how. The only thing I forgot was Liquid Wrench, but I did not need it today. The other thing I learned was how much water the body loses through sweat. I don't always use those nitril gloves but today I did. Whenever I reached, up a warm trickle of liquid rolled down my arm. My first though was, whose peeing on me? I was amazed at how much sweat had accumulated in the glove on a sunny day.

I got home in time for lunch.

I was born in the gnarly part of Jersey…the part everyone thinks of when they hear “New Jersey.”

I like that I’m from there.

I've played that game before. Rear 3rds are always the first part to go, with interior parts a close second. I'm surprised the driveshaft was (mostly) intact--lots of lazy parts grubbers cut those rather than undoing the four bolts to separate it from the diff properly.

I've managed to pull a few 4.56 diffs (an ADD front, a manual front, an 8.5" rear). They're out there... just be on the lookout for 2.7L auto Tacomas and 4Runners. I'm hoping to find some 4.30s someday, as that's a better match for the 5-speed and 31" tires. I don't need 33s. I don't need 33s. I don't need 33s.

Moved out as soon as I could at the age of 17.

Went to Vermont. Would still be living there if not for winters. I had. No. Idea.

Lasted three years there before the Winter of ‘93 broke me.

Moved to Colorado in ‘94. Left part of my soul in Vermont in the Winter of ‘93.

Been living in Colorado longer than some of the “you’re not a native” crusaders have been alive.

Ready to either move into the mountains or to another quiet state where I’ll have to explain my existence

    You don’t. 32’s are perfect on a 1st gen. 255/75R17

not until you finish the addition/garage. How’s that going?

no trimming necessary, right? Just a little heat gun to the inner fender liner?
