No, there are several threads here which address comments like what your sales associate told you.

To take things one step further, my understanding (someone please correct me if I'm wrong), the following is true:
Since your VIN is showing the 11th character as "M", your Tacoma will be built in Tijuana.

Or they simply didn't know or repeating something they heard from someone else. In my experience, car salesmen are rarely experts on the vehicles they are selling. They care about moving product more than where something was made or its technical performance etc.
Not saying that is true for all, but the ones that do, are usually fans or consumers of the product themselves. Not something the dealership is really providing training for.

    Hi all,

I put a deposit on a 22' OR in Lunar Rock a few weeks ago. Salesman (friend) told me it was already built, gave me a VIN, I downloaded the Toyota app, and on 8/12 I got a notification the doors unlocked and the car drove 6 miles.

The delivery date started at 9/14, then 9/13 and now I am at 9/20 (he updates me all of the time)... My question is, with the truck driving 6 miles, is that a good sign for 9/20 or should I not get my hopes up?

You might give him the benefit of doubt; my son who is a "car guy" is a Toyota salesman (for all of two weeks); he tells me his peers at the dealership don't know diddly-squat about cars. In many cases, sales people tell lies simply because they were lied to by their management.

After reading past posts till I'm about stare crazy, I've learned a lot, though not much is encouraging!

Seems Rod03 can check my Temp Vin ...... till the truck is built (possibly the 24th) , at which time the Temp Vin dies and the Tacoma is assigned a Permanent Vin ....... is this correct? If so, I assume I have to go back to the Dealer to get my permanent Vin???? Hell my salesman didn't even know the truck as built in Mexico, so I'm sure he'll be no help with the Permanent Vin! By the way he's been selling Toyotas for 30+ years:mad::mad::mad:

This Stealership has sold me my LAST vehicle:angrygirl::annoyed:

Yep, I have been told by a couple local dealers, that Army Green is gone after 2022. That is why I stepped up my search to nationwide and found a Longbed Limited AG 1,200 miles from home. Put money on it. 2nd week of October target delivery.

@Rod03 Whoops, guess I had the temp vin. This is the production one if you wouldn't mind giving it another shot.

Really depends. He should be able to see if it's in route via rail or whatever, which will be a better sign than mileage. FWIW, I've done the same as far as get my VIN from my salesman, download the Toyota app, get door unlock notifications, etc. Mine was built 8/12, has 5 miles on the odometer, and apparently is en route via rail and scheduled to be delivered to the dealership this week. So I would say that it all depends on where it was built, where you are, and other factors out of our control. Mine was built in Tijuana and I'm in Denver.

From my experience, seeing notifications & miles on the odometer, etc, is a good sign... but see if you can get your salesman friend to look up the details of where the truck is at in the shipping process, that would be more helpful.

Hate to be this guy and keep bugging you @Rod03 but the dealer is giving zero information on ETA and I’m suppose to be headed out of town in the next couple days and want to get the truck taken care of before.

    Thanks man!

Well, these are different times. I remember when we could go to a dealership lot and see tens of vehicles of the model we were interested in. I don't know of any manufacturers who are in that position, unless their vehicles are not of great interest to the purchasing public, and even then, may be handicapped by part availability. The Tao saying "the limb that bends does not break" comes to mind.

Just my opinion here: I, like another poster don't blame Sales. Some may be hip on the internet, and some may not. We don't know the situation they are in except, how do you sell product and make a living when there is no product to sell?

Seems vehicles are made in just a couple of places based on where the allocation was and where it's going. From that, you can estimate the cycle time. BUT, there are other factors, like transport/rail union strikes that are out of the control of manufacturers in some cases.

Knowing my VIN became permanent and was updated from temporary on the dealership site the day after it was predicted to be built was helpful. I think those updates come from Toyota, not some web designer at the dealership, right?
With @Rod03 answering many requests for info from other people, knowing how to decode a VIN, knowing where it was made, and with the transactional info from the Toyota app, I think I have a good handle where it is in transport now, and when to expect it at the dealership +/- a week... And that's fine for my wife and I. But others out west may not be so lucky.

However, if I had a vehicle on order since Nov, Dec, Jan timeframe, I'd be looking at another strategy for getting the vehicle. I'd be looking at what was on allocation at nearby dealerships, and putting a deposit on something very similar to what I wanted that wasn't spoken for. I wouldn't wait for 2023 models because, the situation isn't going to change over night.

To some extent, we can mod the truck to add things that otherwise wouldn't be manufactured and delivered up front. In other cases no. Critical to me was the Tech package that provided BSM and RTCA functions. On trim and color, I was flexible.

If you can't be flexible, and if you want a specific configuration, the reality is, not now, and most likely not for some time to come. Check with other manufacturers. You'll probably find the same situation. Then again, you may not. The best we can do is make an educated decision on what we'll buy during these times and set our own expectations appropriately.

Surely, sometime into the future, we'll (perhaps) look back at this and go "who would want to have bought a vehicle during that period of time?". For me, a much more important set of questions are: how will my kids find a good paying job that allows the purchase of a home, transportation, and a family. It really isn't about trucks in the long-run the way I look at it. YMMV.

And I read here the last allocation had some 2023’s already in it, so I would guess the last Army Green might be rolling off the assembly line very soon. I had to decide between (1) Army Green and a $4K premium (2) Lunar Rock or (3) compromise on the trim and packages I wanted. I took door #2.

Hello everyone, I placed a deposit last week on a vehicle already allocated for that dealership. I'm really excited. I have purchased several new cars over the years, but Iv'e always wanted a Tacoma. it's not ePro I wanted, but its a well equipped off road. Sales person said build date was around 9/5 and that I could expect delivery around late October. Does this sound realistic based on what there are seeing for delivery timelines? I'm located in CT.

    Thank you
    Mike
