I set myself a calendar reminder for three years to inspect/replace the Anode rod. I'll have to do another reminder to drain the tank.

Does anyone have a walk behind brush mower? Which is best? DR or Swisher? Billy Goat is too expensive.

I have a Swisher walk behind trimmer, it has been a solid machine.

My only gripe is that like every Briggs pull start engine I have ever had it is an absolute bear to restart when hot.

I have a DR wood chipper too, it is a well built easy to service machine.
It was expensive and I'm satisfied with the quality.

The wood chipper hurt to buy for a cheap guy, no doubt.

I justified it as a pretty much forever purchase, there are 2 big grease fitting equiped four bolt block bearings that can be bought at any industrial supply even TSC, 2 belts and one replaceable cutter.

It has a 16hp Vanguard engine that I can't imagine you could ever wear out doing just personal work if it is serviced occasionally.

The thing is built like a Mack truck. :benchpress:

I wouldn't buy thier fixed blade etc. It's only exclusive to thier machine and that blade is 3 times the amount of other options, those after costs can add up quick.

    Thanks for the replies guys.
I have some acres of woods in the back and, when I bought the house and property three years ago, I went in and took out, by hand, the brush back to the creek. Well, now my wife wants me to do it again because, it is mostly southern pine stand of trees, lots of nice pine needle ground but has lots of pop up saplings and bushes and such. It's really pretty for a back yard if all the bushes and things were out of the way.

Been looking at both Swisher and DR. I have used the DR before when volunteering for trail clearing back in WV. It is a horse for sure but, has a Briggs and Stratton engine. Here are the main differences:
The Swisher does not have any power steering but does have a Honda engine.
The DR has disc brake steering but has a Briggs engine.
Both are geared with reverse. Both have key start.

I think I am going for the steering. Will only use it 4-6 times a year. Can live with the engine. 14.5 hp.
I was just asking for the general quality of the DR and Swisher.

Question for new residential riding mower purchase.
So I am thinking about buying a used riding lawn mower but at this time don't have any particular one picked out, I was thinking toro, john deere, cub cadet, or husqvarna. I want a deck width roughly 36-42 inches, I would really like a mulching feature(maybe I can install mulching specific blades). Are there any particular models that are notoriously bad? Any tips for things to look for when shopping for a used one? I have no experience with riding mowers at all.

Cub Cadet (MTD) parts are the most commonly available.
I personally have never had any luck with any used green tractors.

    How large a yard?
Do you just want to mow or do you want to plow snow and move dirt too?
Just to mow a zero turn is way faster.

Four yards totaling I would guess 2 acres.
I only need to mow. Zero turn is larger then I need and too expensive. I see lots of riding lawn mowers on FB/CL in the $500-$700 range that I figure I would buy one of.

I have bought a lot of $500 mowers, the problem is you often end up putting $500 in them and still have a $500 mower...

It is always the deck that is the problem, throwing belts, eating belts -- at $50+ each that gets costly, not to mention the p-i-a factor. Next biggest problem is the steering.

You bought it to work not work on but you will, it helps if you have some tools and can weld.

Cub Cadet (MTD built) and the older Sears tractors built by AYP (American Yard Products) are the cheapest and easiest ones to get parts for, advantage probably to CC.

2 acres... cry once, buy once, time savings, ZTR FTW, lawn crews don't use riding mowers because they don't last like they used too and they are slow.

I got a small ZT in 2006, from that moment I knew I would never buy a new tractor to mow with.

A small ZT will out mow a larger deck tractor as they are designed to mow faster and there is virtually no wasted time.

An average size residential lawn is about 12-15 minutes.

Yes get a good zero turn for mowing only duties. Spend less time mowing more time enjoying.
