About 3 weeks ago I finally bought another Tacoma. I brought it to Toyota for some recalls (one being new leaf packs however they said they were backordered) and figured I'd have them do an inspection while it was there. They failed me for the inner tie rod boot and then told me that I need a whole new rack and pinion and it would be a $1900 fix. I thought my steering was fine and haven't heard any noises or noticed any drips in my driveway so I ordered the boot/bellows and today I attempted to fix it. I have a ton of play on the inner ball joint so figure it won't hurt to replace both inner and outer tie rods on both sides (truck has 240k) however how exactly would I know if I have a seal leaking? Also, is there anything else I should replace while I have it apart (other than installing my 6112s and UCAs)? Thank you in advance.

i mean if your rack is leaking you are going to see fluid somewhere if not then keep an eye on the reservoir for it. if it keeps loosing fluid then its leaking somewhere

Frankly at a quarter million on a second gen if your rack wasn't loose and leaking I'd be concerned.

Unfortunately part of that cost is the obnoxious labor of fishing all the rack parts out because it is shoehorned in there.

id imagine someone would have changed it by now thou right? pretty wild to think one would last that long unless it was only driven on the road maybe?

Most people don't jump their trucks. But it's pretty common to see second gen's come into the dealership at around 220,000 or so and start having loose steering and leaking rack and pinion. I seen them as high as 265,000 before they've started having issues. I'm sure there are some out there that clear 300,000 without having issues but for the most part dealership logs them right around that 220 mark.

Same exact situation with my 03 Corolla. Went in for inspection, had to replace the rack and pinion because there was virtually no power steering fluid left at around 250k. They thought I was nuts for saying I hadn't seen any fluid, because they said it was leaking on the ground at the shop, lol. Nothing was whining and steering was totally fine. Seriously had no clue there was an issue. Bid for it sounds about right though.

You can add UV dye to the power steering reservoir. Drive it for a bit and crawl under with a UV light.

My reservoir is dirty though it isn't low (I'll be doing all fluids when the weather is a little more manageable). I think the truck drives perfectly fine. They called to tell me about the $1900 fix however all it mentioned on the rejection was a torn boot so I was just gonna replace that until I actually felt an issue. They also did a courtesy inspection in which they said my air filter and cabin air filter needed to be changed even though my glove box was still off and the box for the new cabin air filter, which was already installed, was on the floor. The engine filter was clean as can be as well as I checked it when I got it and then when I cleaned the engine bay and pulled off the hardware.

I guess the other option is Jim bobs gears and more but no guarantees on the installation
