So I finally got acoustic panels for our bedroom since that's where our big TV is, and my gf hates them. Thinks they're ugly as hell. Can't get her to come around, even with clever design ideas

I think I need to pay off some of her friends to come over and talk about how cool they are

I had some in an extra bedroom years back for my 2 channel setup; I miss that room.

You should clap, or...you know...clap...and demonstrate the lack of muddiness, echoing, etc. from any and all noise emitted inside said room.

compromise?
I've made diffusers out of wood that look pretty great. They aren't as good as foam, but they definitely help. You can also use your foam inside of a canvas painting. Again, not quite as good as what you were probably imagining, but it's an improvement over nothing.

Thanks, I actually built a few 2D diffuser-aborbers tediously a few year ago using a plunge router hundreds of times. Filled with mineral wool and covered with a fairly permeable fabric
