There were so many things that was wrong with that recovery just by looking at the picture. First thing I did when I got into off roading was take my FJ to a recovery course in Orange VA (overland something I believe it was called). They taught all the details of recovery from the use of a winch, snatch strap, angels, high lift, weighted line, etc.. Probably the best safety investment I ever made into the vehicle/driver for only $150 bucks back then.

I've been wanting to do something like that. I watch video's about it, but I think a class or two would be a good thing.

 

Yeah, there is nothing like getting out there and going through the hands on training. We used our own vehicles to better understand our own vehicle dynamics and how to setup recovery gear. Even the basics of using a hi lift and not denting your door are taught (because who gets a class in using them!). We did single vehicle recovery, double, multiple angle recovery. The best thing of all was ensuring that you were understanding of your equipment and how energy is transmitted.
My lesson learned is that not everyone deserves to be helped out while you put wear and tare on your own gear.

 

I looked at the website and reached out as they don't have anything local scheduled. I watch a lot of Justin King's video's and Colorado 4x4 Recovery which he is a part of (all volunteer force) and have learned from them, but you're right, nothing like hands on with your own vehicle. And I agree, there are some people who just need to learn the hard way. I left a guy in a snow bank on I94 in Detroit after he spun two cars out in a snow storm, because he has a 4WD pick up and can drive fast in snow. Pulled out two others and made sure he was OK and left him to pay for a tow.
