    o_Ohttps://www.cnn.com/2022/08/25/us/california-ban-new-gas-cars-vote/index.html

Wow, so my then new 2017 may really be the last gas hog I purchase. Used cars are going to cost a fortune after 2035…. Gen 4 all electric?

per the article..”Starting with 2026 models, 35% of new cars, SUVs and small pickups sold in California would be required to be zero-emission vehicles. That quota would increase each year and is expected to reach 51% of all new car sales in 2028, 68% in 2030 and 100% in 2035. The quotas also would allow 20% of zero-emission cars sold to be plug-in hybrids.”

The economics of this won’t work well even for those outside of Cali who want to buy gas powered trucks in the near future. They’re going to be expensive.

I’m thinking of putting my third Gen on blocks and keeping it on wraps for my retirement fund!

How do you charge a zero emissions vehicle, without using electric produced primarily from coal fired plants? I get wind and solar, but I think they only produce a small faction of our electric.

I’m Not anti electric vehicles, just don’t believe something comes from nothing. That’s not even addressing the batteries and electronics.

You don’t, but that isn’t the only reason to go electric.

Electric motors are inherently way more efficient than internal combustion

Large scale power generation is more efficient than small individual engines

End result is more of the power we generate being turned into motion instead of wasted as heat.

In theory anyway, we’ll see how it plays out.

Gas engines are 35% efficient at their maximum, and around 20% on average. Extraction and refinement further reduce this efficiency. Power plants are around 80% efficient, electricity transmission is 80-90% efficient, charging is around 97% efficient, and electric motors are around 90% efficient. All that is still more than 50% efficient, over double the typical energy efficiency of combustion.

Even if all electricity used by vehicles is from coal, it's still a reduction in fossil fuel consumption to go through all the hoops of electricity. Renewable energy is on a growth trend, even if snail paced. The more renewable energy that goes into the grid, the better, and as time goes on, it favors electric driven transportation.

The biggest problem is not even the energy. It's the energy storage. You're already on to that though. Those EVs and plug ins have to get their batteries from somewhere and made out of something, and with current technology, there is not enough material to make an EV for everyone. This will cause another supply and demand problem that will drive prices up. California's plan is to sneakily price people out of driving combustion engines. When combustion gets too expensive, it will force creativity or people will just go back to more primitive means. Like it or not, that's how our system is moving.

^^^this^^^. Unfortunately though, it will have some limitations such as being able to do long trips off-road, things like that where you normally wouldn’t have charging stations. Technology is changing fast though, and even controlled fusion is becoming more of a realistic power source.

Enough sun energy hits the planet in 60 seconds to power the entire world's energy needs for a year. The challenge is finding a way to capture and store that energy

I don't like ev's but I see it as a solution for people who have no appreciation for i.c.e and just see driving as a chore. As long as they don't ban current i.c.e I'm fine with it. Sounds like they figured out the grid, range, and the child labor issues.

It's a dream, we don't have enough electrical infrastructure to power what we have now and we wana convert our massive fleet of road vehicles to electric?!
Where's all that extra power supposed to come from?
We already see what happens when there's a heat wave or cold snap, rolling blackouts, brownouts, people without power for days...

Lotta good that "clean" electric car/truck is gona be when our power grid collapses.

That's just one of the problems with it not to mention the cost and resouces that go into making the batteries.

I have no problem with electric and hybrid vehicles, if you want one go for it but don't force it on us.

20+20+3+10 is 53% efficiency lose for 47%, versus 20% ICE is only 27% better not 50%.
