Rock Auto's Shipping Policy to Colorado

How can I find out when RockAuto will be able to ship to Colorado? Their website has no phone number and everything must be done online. They don't even post their email address.

Whatever it is that prevents them from shipping to Colorado has been going on for at least 2 years. I'm sure that RockAuto is losing a lot of money with this screwed up shipping policy regardless of whose fault it is. Too bad they don't care about the potential in Colorado.

It's been over 3 years now. last time I looked into this they said they had no plans ship to Colorado for political reasons. They refuse to collect municipal tax nor ignore it like other online retailers do

 

You're loosing RockAuto's service by not relocating.

But seriously. Companies have a right to look after their best self interest and make policies accordingly. I'm sure there are other retailers that offer whatever RockAuto is selling.

 

What political reason do they have for not shipping to CO? Sounds crazy.

Rock Auto will ship to Brighton in my experience.

 

Shouldn't that just be added into the overall tax rate? For example, I'm paying 10.25% here but that rate is consisted of the state tax and a bunch of county, local, etc taxes.

 

Right, when I contacted them they said they refused to calculate anything more than state sales tax. They didn't want to add county/city/municipality taxes because it's "too complicated to figure out"

Sounds like a huge loss of opportunity to me but maybe they are doing so well that they don't care.

 

At my last job we sold B2B telecom/voip services , and I managed the billing and tax integration with Avalara. It's surprisingly complicated once you have to get down to figuring out is this address in a particular municipality. They had an API for entering an address and getting back a location code that they would use to determine tax rates, but sometimes addresses would be close to a county line or city boundary and it wouldn't return a locale code and I would have to manually guess. For as many orders as Rockauto gets I'd imagine it would be complicated. Still seems like it'd be worth the dev hours.

 

Having had to deal with this paper work the loss of sales to Colorado would be over whelmed by the paper work cost.

collecting and filing a separate city sales tax is a night mare just dealing with state sales tax is a pain

it would be different if each sale was a minimum of a $1000.00 The way Rock Auto seems to be set up the profit margin is very little.

Your charged a State and Local sales tax on your invoice??

That's funny.

I was a finance director at our dealership and it was frustrating even then when it came to figuring property tax and dmv fees for vehicles sold. Over the years, due to tax increases, I'd have to go into our DMS manually updating and changing rates as state remained the same, but certain counties had gone up or down.

This was especially important because some addresses, like mentioned above, fell in a certain city but were right outside the county line or vice versa.

Policies and procedures made sure we were accurate (and compliant) as I made sure we had a manual search record printed for each address filed away with every car deal.

Makes sense why Rockauto said NOPE.

 

I think that the "ship-to" zip code determines where RA will ship their stuff. And...
