You know I have a tough time telling if you're being funny or contrarian if we're not in person. :p

Same. I dropped out of two fancypants ones :anonymous:

Found out WAY later a relative who'd passed away had left me, not exactly inheritance, but some money strictly for education only...its still just sitting there. I guess if life ever gets weird I can just bail out to academia.

I'm glad my kids didn't go in for that expense. They are more like this.

Is it a 529 account (I think that's it)? We have one set up for our daughter. If so, you can still get the money but there will fees if it's pulled out for non education.

529 savings can be applied toward trade schools if you have any interest in learning a trade for funsies

That's a good question, I'd have to check. I know (didn't find out until 2020) that I can also use it for independent study. So say I wanted to go do a coding bootcamp or brush up by taking some design classes etc., I can do that as well. I'm sure trade study would count. That's great that you set one up for her, she'll be happy she has it I'm sure.

I'm still annoyed with myself for bailing on guitar when I was like 14. I have thoughts now and again of giving it a go for fun.

Very very true. I'd like to at least know, as an adult, I gave it a proper try. Music can be an intimidating thing.

Like coding. But really it's about reading symbolic notation and knowing when it takes a loop.

I dont support forgiveness of debt in the slightest, but it is what it is. I dont have any school debt because I went the community college route, but Ill offer my opinion on the following.

You wanna get college tuition down?

Take away all the bullshit degrees such as dance, acting, underwater basket weaving or whatever. The list goes on there. Get people set up to be productive. You shouldnt need a degree to teach dance 101.

Take away all the bullshit classes required for decent degrees. Why the hell did I need an advanced writing class or sociology for my Associates degree in electronics?

Along with the above, get rid of the 120 credit hour min for a bachelors. Half of its all fluff that you have to pay for and you will never need in your career.

Lastly, screw the companies that are requiring such high degrees for entry level positions. Do you really think the kid with the bachelors knows more than the guy that has no degree, but 2-3 years experience? If that werent the case, student debt wouldn't be an issue. And funny enough its those company type men that are complaining the most about what just happened...
