So the real attraction of EVs is that it's someone else's problem. My Tesla (electric bike, Bolt or whatever) doesn't emit. Whatever pollution results from making the electric energy to power it isn't my fault.

So all the EV owners think they are doing good because their teslas don't spit pollutants out on their neighborhood, but don't give a damn that their teslas are polluting hell out of the towns with power plants.

If anyone reads the Times, there was a recent article about NYC punishing buildings for the pollution created at power plants to supply them electricity. Why aren't tesla owners punished for the same sins?

Because this logic doesn't hold: it's still a net reduction in emitted carbon for the planet.

Not much confidence in anything at -40 that doesn’t produce heat.

You get it. Electric cars are not the answer. The answer is totally rethinking our entire transportation system. Individual passenger cars are the most energy inefficient things widely used by humans and it's 100% not sustainable with our global population size and utilization rate. Either less people have to use cars, less people have to exist, or there has to be a way to produce and deliver at least 10x the electricity we already use. None of those are going to be easy to fix, although the easiest is for less people to use cars. This can be accomodated with a very drastic shift to public transportation that will be extremely difficult and unpopular, but it beats the heck out of genocide until we work out a way to feed our appetite for power. That or people can just get priced out of driving and we have a paradoxical society that is riddled with car-centric infrastructure that is hostile to anyone without a car, yet only the very wealthy can afford to operate a car.

Thanks to human nature and nash equilibria (the concept of people hurting themselves and everyone by doing what's superficially in their own best interest), this is the most likely outcome if drastic change doesn't happen soon.

New car sales aside, think about the entire industry that operates and benefits off of combustion engines and vehicles (railroads, shipping container boats at ports, trucking companies, parts stores, repair shops, gas stations, aftermarket parts businesses) and think about the ripple effect it will have on the economy to put all of them out of business by switching to electric. Not mention the loss of tax revenue for city, state and fed if/when they go out of business.

It's not feasible to pull the plug and switch over to a new fuel source. :boom::popcorn:

This legislation is only talking about consumer passenger vehicles and not any of the things you just mentioned. Railroads are a great example of something that should have been electric 50 fucking years ago, though.

It would be interesting to see what happens if the entire state of California hits 0F for a week. I’m sure y’all will handle it just fine.

I think it also includes leaf blowers, lawn mowers, chain saws, dirt bikes, side by sides, ect. A bit of a rabbit hole really.

Ah yes, California, a state that sees no massive blizzards/snow storms/winter freezes.

Calling out PG&E for killing people in fire would have been a more intelligent burn that's actually accurate.
