On our new 2011 DC w/ TRD off road package the rear bumper is rusting after less than 3 months!
So, I'll be taking it back to the dealer next week to complain.
I have read that some people are having the chrome bumper replaced with the black one.
Does the black one last any longer?
    Is it powder coated?
Why such a crappy plating job on the chrome one?
Kind of disappointed :(, $30K and this!

Mine is a year old and it hasn't rusted yet, of course mine is painted but I haven't noticed rust anywhere on my truck yet. I wonder if the salt they use on the roads back there is especially hard on the chrome that Toyota applies.

Does the black bumper have the black plastic "coverings" on it like the chrome one does?

The chrome bumper is just primed plastic. Looks and works great, though! 100 billion times better than the chrome POS.

I have gotten surface rust on mine from time to time. It always polishes off though. However the chrome plating job on the bumper really sucked. The driver side looks yellowed and hazy. It's always looked like that. I tried to polish it, but it still looks like poop.

I just changed my 2010 chrome bumper out for a black primed bumper and both are metal. The bumpers are not very heavy material!

The first I recall hearing about the chrome bumper rusting was on the new 2010 models. I wonder why Toyota has such problems with their chrome bumpers?

My 2009 is fine, but I live an an arid climate...
