Sorting through emails over here because I lost all of my categories when our IT contractor migrated us over to their email system. Neat.

I would say so. Not as bad as a Volvo that saw that had been sitting for over 10 years.

I’m just over here hoping for a day when perpetual fire drills are the exception and not the rule :annoyed:

    Oof. Shots fired! :infantry:

But also true. We engineer something…

    chaos, maybe?

haha. I've been on that side of the fence too at different companies, and its the same shit all over. Defining requirements, testing and documentation is a really hard problem to solve.

    Hahaha

I'm slowly becoming enough of a SME that i spend more time reviewing/planning and sitting in meetings than I do writing code. Feels kind of weird.

Pretty much my job, right there.

Now imagine a sales and marketing team. This team doesn’t actually SELL or MARKET. What they really do is come up with Good Ideas. They’re Good Idea Fairies, if you will. Bestowing said Good Ideas like a beef cow shits in a field, but with more buzzwords.

A naive person might think, “Hey, maybe these guys will provide me with the requirements, market study, or literally anything useful to perform the job that (I think) they’re asking of me”. But no. That’s not how this works. That’s not how ANY of this works. Instead, we simple engineers must act on faith that they have the data to back up the KNOWLEDGE that they purport to have.

Want something in writing, to you know, work from and shit? Nah, it’s all in their HEADS, man! Those big, beautiful heads so full of ego, delusions of grandeur, and voices that tell them to always be the loudest talker in the room. That’s where your market study is, bro! Just trust them!

So being a simple minded engineer (if you were more enlightened, you’d be in marketing and sales, right?!), you march off to do the incredibly ill-defined thing that just got shat onto your desk. You buy equipment (not cheap, it’s never cheap!), you write procedures based entirely on vaporware, and you might even actually design a product that meets these far-from-clear requirements. And then what happens, you ask?

Said Marketing douche tells you that that was never what they wanted (God, these fucking engineers, right?!), that YOU just burned up their schedule and budget (likely stolen from some other bastard’s program), and that he has no choice but to explain to the customer that it was all because of this silly engineer that their hopes and dreams were dashed, all while they sip scotch and gawk at strippers, because why would I meet the customer anywhere BUT a strip club, you fucking heathen?!

And then the whole thing starts over, because Sales Douche #1 is then replaced at your desk with Sales Douche #2, who came highly recommended by Douche #1, because they both pledged at the same douchey frat at the same douchey school, and his dad did a great job of getting that nasty DUI charge thrown out last year after that party where that one stripper blew Jeff after she puked all over the beer keg.

It’s a tale as old as time, really.
