So heres the deal, i swapped in a j shift TC out of a 1999 4rnr into my 2004 tacoma to replace my pushbutton TC. everything is in and seems to be working fine except the speedometer.
Any idea what the problem is? Tacoma speed sensor seem to fit perfectly in 4rnr case.

    Thanks in advance

IDK too much but 4r but I do know that they get their speed signal from the rear abs sensor, thus the 4R tcase might not have the gear to drive the speed sensor like the tacoma does. This is my assumption...

Yeah i have heard of that being an issue, when i pulled the cap off the 4runner tc it looked like the worm gear was there to drive the speed sensor but no speedo readout.

@yotadude520 might have some additional info for you

Take a look at what he mentions here...

@Area51Runner i did reach out to him as well based off of another post id seen him comment on. Hmm that speed sensor looks identical to the tacoma one i used in the 4 rnr t case.

Remains to be seen I bought the tires and wheels the rest came along
It might be as simple as the pin outs on the plug are different .

Could just be simple corrosion( unseen by the naked eye ) from being exposed to the air

Maybe swap the speed sensor from the old transfercase.

@Bivouac I used the same speed sensor out of the tacoma that was working, just unbolted it from the push button tc and moved it to the side and bolted it back into the 4 rnr tcase.

@mlcc from my understanding the 4rnr used wheel speed sensors for their speedo. The 4rnr tc just had a block off plate over the sensor location so no old one to swap in.

It feels like the teeth are engaging from sensor to worm gear but no readout on speedo.

Anyone have any ideas?? I just checked my speed sensor and it seems good. I spun it by hand and got a reading on the dash. I measured from the mounting surface of sensor to the gear drive and both tc are the same. What am i missing as to why this wont work?

Couldn't find much info on this but swapping the worm gear from my electric shift case over to the new Jshift case fixed my speedometer to. The Jshift case has a worm gear thats to small for the speedo gears to contact

My factory wiring harness doesn't reach the new location. Been driving w/o a speedo since.

Just cut the wires and extend them, you just need some butt connectors and heat shrink, takes like 10 minutes

eh, I'll be wiring my Haltech into the circuit eventually, just was noting yet another thing that 4x4 conversion guides seem to leave out
