I was wondering "why didn't this piece just fall out?"

    It's double stacked

Black, only if you had time otherwise plain is fine.

And I actually prefer to support ya vs some random nobody, or much worse..a big company with tons of machines.

You paid for it in equipment, plus learning how to use said equipment. I appreciate having the opportunity of what you've got to offer!

    Edit: payment sent!

Once your done with school you will know the answer!

I have welded anything on a Toyota 4x4 with any decent 120VAC hard wire machine with .023 wire what ever shielding gas CO2 or 75/25 blend.

That kind of work reminds of those days in the strippins

You worked for cheap learning the craft then after a year or 2 got a real job and most times doubled your wages.

The foreman knew he was running a school for the other Co-Gens he could only pay so much.

I love my plasma cutter; so much faster than dealing with cutting wheels and lots of time wasted

Thanks! Looks good. I’m excited to do my own work on my truck but will be tackling that at a way later date lol
Thanks man! It’s been good so far. And yeah every video I’ve watched of people doing shock mounts or anything really it’s been MIG but I was jus

My smallest project to date, only cost me $3 in material.

Wife wanted me to put up a no soliciting sign.

Requirements, non-intrusive and not being affixed to the wall. So I copied making one of those banner holders that stick to the ground.

Cut the stem length, and legs.

    Some welds putting it altogether.

Sharpened the ends of the feet as they'll dig into the ground.

Took some really thin scrap flat stock and welded up the sign frame.

Welded up the sign frame to the stem.

Left out in the sun for just a moment to let the paint dry.

    Done.

What is the technical term for stacking tack welds?

ie make a good tack, tack again overlapping the previous tack, all the way down the needed weld?

Instead of starting, then doing the shark tooth pattern all the way? ( i have been taught the shark tooth pattern)

Is this a competent way to weld?

If it's just to hold something, sure.

I know what you're talking about as I had to do that on the shield of a catalytic converter and it was thin as hell; was on my transformer-based machine running .035 wire at work. Sheet metal for sure.

But I wouldn't do it on anything that requires strength. I'd just dial it down and use a thinner wire to weld it like my above sign. That flat stock was stupid thin (thinner than it looks in the pics, sheet metal basically) and would easily burn through at just 18v. Had to dial it down to 17v and 120 wirespeed.

Pictures are always a great help.

Like was said it comes down to just what the job is. I have never heard of a Shark Tooth pattern.

If your stacking tack welds that tells me The first one in not correct.

Making sure when you finish weld the tack welds are burnt through.

New welders tend to over weld everything. Learn to do what ever needs done to control the heat.

    Every welder is different.

Only time I used a weave like that is when I've had to fill a gap going uphill, basically a root weld between beveled edges.

    paint_and_drawing_fun_file_2022-08-28-052837.jpg

Going in such a motion allows weld to fill as you move up the metal.

Things change since I was in school in the early seventies.

Weave beads like that were discouraged .

One instructor loved his triangle pattern in vertical up .

Some many things come into play depending on the job big difference between 16 gauge and 1/2"

    Good luck!

We only weave a tiny bit to not blow through a big gap. Straight and steady most of the time.

I have 100% seen my welds are waaay better traveling up rather than down.

Like @Bivouac added, material thickness will greatly influence how you weld it as well.

As for verticals, way I was taught was go up if it's thick but go down if it's thin.

You'll also notice you need to drop your wirespeed way down when going downhill.

You'll see that I ran some stringers cause the square tubing is thinner than the bracket or c channel it's welded to.

These things come with experience !! When adjusting wire speed is a pain increase travel speed !

When your not lucky enough to have a helper.
