Pretty thin lined width area and a hight impact point for wind deflection I'm thinking.

Still emailing everyday. Even though I complained before my warranty was up they are still saying nothing can be done for my truck now. Ridiculous got to be a way to sue them or something.

I think a lot of people in this thread will have to get really good at using those rattle cans of dupli color. That's my plan if I can't sell this albatross for a halfway decent price.

haha just found another spot. If you are reading this and have a white tacoma 3rd gen sell the fucker right now. You've been warned.

The duplicolor isn’t a terrible solution, but in my experience the process seems to accelerate the peeling. In particular, in the prep and clean up I couldn’t get the tape to release without pulling off chunks and chunks of paint. I guess lots of sanding would have helped get the loose paint off, but sanding paint just to find out if it’s adhered or not is not setting well with me. I almost got out a screwdriver to see how far the peeling went before I got sick to my stomach.

I've already had my rear passenger door re-painted. (thread) Now I noticed my rear driver side door, as well as spots inside the engine bay near the top of the front quarter panels on each side.

I also have some spots of rust showing up around the door sill protectors on both front driver and passenger. I stopped by the dealership body shop for estimates as well as reaching out to Toyota for covering the repair.

The manager there told him that it was unlikely to be covered since mine is a 2017 and they have TSBs that cover 36K miles or 5 years. After a month of waiting on Toyota I stopped out at the dealership and told them what happened. I was waiting for a response, through the body shop, through this dealer's service center. They got the service manager and he said he would look into it and get back to me. The next day he left a message saying everything was approved by Toyota go ahead and schedule service with the body shop.

So I am getting the front quarter panels, hood to blend, rear driver door, and all door sills repainted covered by Toyota six years after delivery. Nice work Toyota

After reading this thread it seems more of a paint bonding issue / thin coat on the affected areas. I take delivery of my white 23 TRD 6MT in mid October and I am thinking the first stop is my preferred detail shop and having the truck ceramic coated in CSII or Revivify+.

I have friends with super white who have had no issues (yet) - 2018 TRD DCSB, 2016 4Runner, and a 2020 Tundra. Which did give me a bit of confidence, but ooof, this threat is making me think twice.
FWIW - I'm dead set on white. I forego the ceramic coating and add a "college" fund and toss $$$ each month into a post warranty paint job :boom:

You could wax or ceramic coat the truck once a week and it still won't prevent this from happening.

Is this still an issue for new trucks? I've got a '21 that I'd like to keep, but this has me concerned. Especially being in Michigan with all the road salt. Thin paint will lead to rust in no time.

That was my fear, paint bonding issue opposed to a UV/exposure issue.

This isn't just a Toyota thing. It's any random MFG at any time. GM had a huge problem with white vehicles in the early - mid 90's and again in the early 2000's. Dodge had issues with the mid-late 90's Ram's and not just white. I had a 95' Ram that was 2-tone silver / charcoal. After 10 years there was hardly any paint left anywhere on that truck.

If you haven't already paid for it just get a different color. Or look for a 2022 in stock somewhere. Paint is a HUGE deal and super expensive to fix properly. You will spend thousands to make it look right or be driving a truck that looks all fucky because Uncle Bob who works at MAACO fixed it on a sunday afternoon.

It doesn't matter about other manufactures issues from 20 years ago. Its 2022. Car companies should be able to paint a vehicle and have it last more than 3 years

I agree and certainly understand the cost of a quality paint job, it ain't cheap! It is also the only way I would do it if I had to cross that bridge.

If you haven't spent any money yet cancel the order & get a different color or better yet a completely different vehicle.

When they measured mine the numbers were all over the place. My 1997 Toyota Camry was a much higher quality vehicle than my 2016 Tacoma. The new Toyotas look and drive really well in the beginning but they don't hold up as well.

Toyota is jumping on the "just another mediocre car brand" band wagon. Its sad to see.

I'm sorry, but on that one I can't fault the paint. A set of the OEM plastic mudflaps would've prevented 99% of those. Drive lots of miles on a gravel / dirt road, I'm not sure what they expect would happen any color paint?
