On the older Chrysler transmissions you checked the fluid hot, idling in neutral, they didn't give an accurate reading in park like the GM transmissions, it should be stamped on the stick if required.

Also the older ones used Dexron fluid, if it calls for the newer fluid (type 7176, ATF +3, ATF +4) you want to use that and not Dexron. I don't really trust "one fluid for all manufacturers" products and have always bought the genuine fluid from Chrysler.

The older ones had 2 band adjustments, one inside the pan and the other on the side of the transmission. IIRC low/reverse was inside the pan, second gear was the outside one.

Pro tip: If you are removing the valve body and it drops out on your head -- it leaves a mark... :redxfall:
    ...and hurts...

Took pup’s boat out today for the first time in 5 or 6 years. The motor on it has run like crap since I got it, so I think I’m going to stick the ol 28hp speedo twin back on there and dump this Norseman. I also tried out that omega reel @Tacoma Mike talked me into, and caught this massive pickerel a few casts in. What a nice reel! have a happy Sunday afternoon everyone!!

Crap that will cut your thumb off.
Sorry about your engine woes. Older ones can be cantankerous..
So glad you like the reel.
I usually don’t promote something but it works great IMHO for what I use it for.

I’m usually pretty good with the older Johnson/evinrude motors, this one has been a pain since I’ve had it. I’d like to put a newer 4 stroke on it but they’re just too expensive.
I had a pickerel about that size flail around and catch me on the thumb with its teeth before, it drew blood and the bastard made me drop my fishin pliers.

Thanks! Pickerel can sure put up a fight, but they smell terrible.

When I catch one they for sure are not happy when I throw them back in.
4 strokes are great but like you said like 4 grand for a 25HP.
Don’t use it enough up here for that price on a repower. If something runs good, keep it as long as you can.

It’s hanging around enough that someone has to buy a bag of cat food tomorrow. And a food bowl. And a water bowl. Jeffery junior, JJ for short. Our son named it…

I don’t usually eat pickerel, but I did try it once out of curiosity. Wasn’t bad fried, but they were so bony it took forever to pick them apart. Smoking is probably the way to do it.

Absolutely. Pretty hard to justify a $4k motor for a $600 boat.
