Any hope for a peeling '05 paint job short of getting it totally redone?

You could swap for a fake scoop hood to reduce off road visibility + vinyl anti glare thing

which will still fade if not already

You mean something like this thing?
    https://www.3dcarbon.com/product_p/691248.htm

Not a bad idea, though not sure it'd cover all the peeling. Some of the photos show it as red, some black. I wonder if it comes black and I'd need to paint it, or if it comes painted the standard Tacoma red for an '05-'15?

You can’t stop it. Replacing the hood or painting just the hood total waste of $$$. Other parts will start to look like that too. Your truck is 16 years old, you are lucky. Most Tacos start having the clear coat peel way sooner that 16 years.
You have a number of options but getting the truck painted is your best option. My 09 was like that and I had it painted about 2.5 years ago. Something to think about. Here’s some pics after it was painted.

That's a beautiful truck you got there. Makes me wanna make mine look young again.

Thanks for the suggestion. She's been really good to me all these years. Maybe it's time for a little TLC in the form of a complete paint job.

Wow. That is beautiful. I need to get my '06 repainted. What did repainting the whole thing set you back?

It was $2500 including the camper shell. I had it done at Maaco, they did a great job. Almost 3 years now and it still looks like new. A lot of people bad mouth Maaco but most of them get their information second hand. It’s their friend or cousin or friend of a friend had their vehicle painted there and blah blah blah…. Anyway me and my neighbor both had our trucks painted there and we are both quite happy with them. They are a couple thousand cheaper than other places. Check them out, go get an estimate. I got their highest quality paint and paint job.

Not being an ass. Honest question. In areas where the sun and heat is so brutal, closer to year round, do you guys take measures to counter that, like with more waxings , etc. like many of us in the northern states (etc.) where salt is used do with added frame maintenance, care?

Whenever i see this, i just wonder how much is potentially avoidable by better countering whatever environmental challenges one might have in their area, and what is more of possibly a 'manufacturer issue'....

Toyota trucks are known to have lousy paint. Yes it is a manufacturer issue. The clear coat often starts peeling usually between 8 to 10 years. Sometimes sooner, sometimes longer. The problem is worse where the weather is more extreme and where they salt the roads. Yes frequent applications of wax and other products protects and prolongs the finish and protects against uv rays and other environmental hazards. UV rays are the primary source of paint fade, oxidation and degradation. In addition to applying various products to protect the finish probably the best thing you can do is garage (if possible) the vehicle when not in use.

You get what you pay for. If it's cheap you better be asking yourself how that is possible?
A company mentioned above I previously worked for. To save money they never sanded anything below the beltline.
If you get on one knee and look down the side of your truck I hope you don't see what I am afraid you will.

I knew the nay sayers would soon arrive. The place you worked is not indicative of other shops. Doesn’t mean that other shops are like the the crap place you worked. Maaco is a large franchise and if they were all as bad as you say they’d all be out of business. I’m sure quality varies from shop to shop. The place I took mine was great quality.
I have inspected every square inch of my truck, looks great, no problems. I have a professional detailer who details all my vehicles twice a year, suffice it to say he is impressed with the paint job. My neighbor had his full size 25 year old Chevy truck painted by the same shop a couple months before mine. It’s going on 3 years and it looks great and he couldn’t be happier.
It doesn’t make sense to take an old 12 or 15 year old truck to some shop that’s going to charge $7,000 or $8,000 that’s probably not worth much more than the cost of that paint job.
If a vehicle like my corvette needed painting then yes I’d look for a top quality shop and would not quibble about the cost. But that’s a totally different thing.

I live in WNY, about a half hour outside of Buffalo, NY. My last 3 vehicles were an 87' Toyota pick up, a 2000 Tacoma extended cab, and my current 09' TRD off road double cab. I bought each new. I take good care of my vehicles, and in salt heaven here, i have never had anything close to peeling. 'I guess i must just be 'lucky'.....

Yes you are fortunate. I live in N California, moderate weather, no road salt. My 2009 started having the clear coat peel at about year 8 or 9. I had a Tundra previously that started peeling around year 7. My trucks are outside 24/7 unlike my other vehicles which are garaged.

With all of the road salt here, my 00' and 09 were completely rust free as far as all body panels, and in all visible areas. My 87', on the other hand, bubbled and rusted along the horizontal bed seam, despite all of my efforts to prevent that. Shitty design, and the visible spot weld divits over the rear wheel wells drove me fucking nuts....

My ‘06 Tacoma peeled and faded really bad. It was rarely garage kept and infrequently waxed. I will not make that mistake with my new ‘24 Taco.

In my case I don’t like to wax it if it isn’t immaculately clean because I had a car in the past where the paint developed some scratches from being waxed after being washed but it still had some dirt on it (a friend borrowed the car and washed it before returning it, but not carefully). As a result I did not wax my 06 Taco nearly often enough because I didn’t think it was “clean enough “ to wax and buff. Perfect example of how “perfection is the enemy of progress”.

So, while I DO blame Toyota for an inferior clear coat/paint job, I’m also to blame for not waxing it frequently. Besides, I have 300k miles on it and have had it in the shop so infrequently- one single time for like a $350 repair when it had like 140k miles on it. Don’t even remember what it was. Everything else has been for things that eventually wear out which wore out at a very reasonable time (wheel bearings, alternator at 250kmi, u joints at 285k miles, that’s pretty much it).

So I’m giving Toyota a pass on the clear coat bc the rest of the truck has been bulletproof and I didn’t take as good care of the paint as I did of the engine.

That’s a long way to say, yes I do think years of very harsh sun and not enough waxing is partly at fault, at least in my case.
