You’re comparing an already overpriced high end car to EV version of the same car. I’m talking about someone looking to buy a vehicle to save on operating costs. You don’t get an Audi for that. What’s a similar size vehicle to a Tesla 3? A Mazda 3? What’s the price difference? Way more than you’ll ever save on gas.

There are still plenty of places where the gas stations close at 8:00.

I just picked one on the list that had a gas equivalent. As for pricing, the Q4 is only slightly more than a Tacoma with the premium package optioned and right at the industry wide average for a new car price.

For cheap cars - Toyota Corolla hatchback ($21,300) vs Nisan Leaf ($20,300). I don’t need to do math for a breakeven this time around since the EV is cheaper from the get go.

Was anyone buying a Grand Cherokee because of the claimed 500 mile range?

Probably not, people just wanted the newest SUV that provided the most clout.

Yes Limited is usually reserved for the posh luxury version of what ever. Why did OEMs stop badging luxury EVs as Limited?

The word limited is blasphemous language when trying to sell someone a vehicle that has predetermined range that is limited to it's battery capacity. Which decreases over time.

The Chevy looks cool, the Rivian looks like something campus security naps in.

This new camp-mode update looks cool, self leveling for one thing. As I just got back from a camp trip thinking how nice that would be instead of using chunks of wood or rocks to level with.

Not to mention preproduction models during Long Way Up in South America.

I live in one and I do not believe there is a gas station that is open all night within 75 miles from me here now . Good thing is they started pay at the pump around here about 9 years ago.

Such a good series. Hope he does it again. Maybe with an EV Toyota truck? :p

I’m just jealous that Obi Wan has that much time and money to spend traveling around the world.

That’s an odd comparison of a luxury sedan to a 9 year old Tesla. How about comparing a model S to a Maxima or Avalon?

The same reason why people buy them in the first place, to shown them off.

Great series, think the first one was the best watching Ewan learning to ride. More or less tossed right into the fire!

Really enjoyed Long Way Up, was assuming it was going to be some EV propaganda, but by the end realized it is just the evolution of transportation. Sure do want to head to South America now, that is for sure!

    Me too, brotha, me too…

…as I was trying to figure how to turn my 5 day camp/ride trip into a full time thing. Oh well…and back to the grind.

If you don’t already know, Dirt Sunrise is good to follow. Met Tim a few years ago on a mild off road trip. They somehow figured it out. Someone was yammering on about range, since I like to road trip as much as possible, always concerned about range, super envious of their 1000 mile range diesel Cruiser.

Fame too. He got the manufacturers to sponsor him each time. In fact, there was a bit of a thing about it when he did the first trip because KTM was an option but KTM didn’t want to provide the mechanical support beyond furnishing the bikes. That’s why they went with BMW. Yes, he could have paid for the bike himself, but he didn’t. He mentions some of this in the book.

I once had a pipe dream of taking one of those transaxle Urals through Asia and Europe. Stick my camping gear in the sidecar and boom! Then, in theory they could fix it in Asia since they have a knockoff, and in Russia they have the Ural, and hypothetically there could be services in Europe since the original BMW design was the ones the Russians and eventually Chinese reverse-engineered and produced…

The point being that the Long Way Around approach requires a lot of support. It wasn’t some solo mission where they worked out their issues without a film crew or mechanics that knew the bikes.

I’m not saying it isn’t cool — I would have jumped at the chance of doing it — but it’s not something most people could do. What happens when your Rivian blows an airbag in Mongolia? You have parts flown out to you.

I saw my first R1S in the wild today (no picture). Lots of R1T around, have only seen 1 Hummer and no F150 Lightning. I’m looking forward to all of the electric and hybrid (such as new Sequoia) moving the bar for power trains. The OEMs only innovate to reduce cost, comply with regulation or compete to take/retain market share. All of this innovation is good and will push every OEM to up their game for all vehicles from entry to their range topping models. I might be interested in Rivian once they have an operating history.

Until then I have (refundable) deposits on both a RAV4 Prime and a VW ID.4 for our household. Looks like the ID.4 availability is about a 6-month wait from here. The RAV4 Prime seems to still be 8 or 9 months out.

I also have a reservation on an F150 Lightning, but that seems like I’ll pass on that given the high price for even an XLT trim with the long-range battery.
