Tacoma Vs. Rivian

I like the RIS more than the T also. I've had more fun rock crawling in my Land Cruiser than my Tacoma.

 

My jaw kinda hit the floor when they were trying to decide on which gear to take from the piles in the garage at the start. Man that must be nice! Talk about chase trucks, dayum! We’ll have a chase when we do Baja…but nothing anything near that!

 

The proportions and departure angles are better.

It sort of reminds me of an updated International Travelall. Which I am sucker for vintage iron.

 

Starting to see a few Rivian’s in the wild, super nice in person. Though I like subdued styling compared to the Transformers-esque of most everything else. Saw one Lightning so far, you would miss it if you didn’t know it wasn’t a regular F150, the IRS is what really stood out to me. Good looking truck.

 

A leaf starts at $28K for the small battery. The version with the big battery that’s actually useful for real world driving starts at $36K. That’s a lot of money for a little econobox. You can’t put a price on saving the world though.

I included the $7500 tax credit in the final price of the Leaf. I also figure no one is buying a Corolla hatchback for long distance touring so the range aspect of the Leaf is more than enough for the normal daily driving requirements.

 

IN NJ there's an automatic $2600 rebate applied to the sales slip as well as no sales tax applied. This doesn't include any federal tax rebate if the buyer qualifies. If all rebates apply then a 2022 Nissan leaf with 42Kwh battery will cost $17,700 New. The 60 Kwh has a $4000 at purchase rebate and no sales tax. If Federal and state rebates apply the final cost would be $24,300

 

Both the 149 and 212 ranges are pretty terrible. Especially when you factor in not driving to below 20% battery, cold loss, etc. That’s far away from long distance touring. It’s fine for a city person with no hobbies but not much else.

 

Don't move the goalpost. It's cheap and electric and more efficient than an 'econobox'. If charged properly and you plan long trips then more stops to charge are required. These are to and from work daily drivers.

It wasn't in the parking lot, it was in the exhibitor space. The only other completely stock vehicle was a Ridgeline in the Honda tent.

What are you saying? These are just commuter cars and you need a real car for weekend activities? That doesn’t seem too economical or that great for the environment either.

Also in regards to moving the goal posts. I’ve said comparable vehicles. A car that can only drive 100 miles isn’t comparable to one that can do 300. You need to be comparing the large battery versions for all the EVs. The small batteries are pretty useless and really seem to be just a marketing ploy to say starting at X amount of money. Look at Rivian, they aren’t even making the small battery now.

 

Once again, few people buy a Corolla hatchback to drive long distances. It’s a daily commuter which in nearly every case is less than 150 miles daily drive.

I’ll tell you again what I’ve said many, many times to you and others. If an EV and its range/charging requirements don’t fit your lifestyle then don’t buy one. For someone who doesn’t drive more than 150 miles at a time a Leaf is more economical than a Corolla. Same way a F350 is better than a Tacoma for someone towing a horse trailer.

 

You'e saying that. If you travel farther then you will need to stop and charge more. Pretty simple. You buy the range for your needs. You want a touring car buy a longer range battery. Daily drivers like me the 149 miles is perfect and I recharge at home saving over 50% cost over gas for the same miles traveled and spend $17k for a new BEV. Its a win win for me.

 

I don’t think that’s true. A lot of Corolla drivers are young people that want a brand new car but not spend a ton of money. They use it for commuting but also for all their weekend activities and vacations too.

 

Go to a dealership that sells EVs and ask the salesperson if what ever EV you are looking at comes in a Limited trim? See how they react.

Tesla has a model S Plaid. Plaid? You only buy things in plaid because the product isn't produced in a solid color.

 

You’re still comparing apples to oranges though. The argument is that an EV is much more expensive than a “comparable” ICE vehicle. Not comparing a moped to a Ferrari or any other ridiculousness.
