New truck... and scratches galore

I made the mistake of washing my truck with a brush at the car wash down the road. Lesson learned. The entire truck was covered in swirls after and they really pop on the black paint. I just recently took it to a place to have it ceramic coated and they were able to remove all the swirls and it looks brand new again. The ceramic coating was pricey, but it has a 10 year warranty.

 

Black shows scratches worst than any other color, since you have black now I would invest in a polisher. I'm by no means a professional detailer but with Adams Polish products and their videos to show me what to do I get great results like 95% scratch free with black.

 

salesman is going to talk with his manager to see what they can do... he feels terrible about it. I've bought 9 vehicles my entire life and this guy was the best person i've ever bought from so I feel a bit bad complaining about it.. The dealership is top notch, this is my 4th time doing business with a Toyota dealer and they definitely stand out as the best to me. Hoping they can come up with a solution but if they can't thats ok too its not like the roof is dented in.

Again yeah I know its a black truck and im going to add my own dings and scratches.. but a new truck I feel like shouldn't be like this. Like I said in my original post I bought my tundra new and had it for 4 years in the same color as this Tacoma and never had these kinds of marks on it.

 

Anyone ever get there hand buff on?. gonna give it a go today . Any advice ?.

 

Agree that Adams products are pretty good quality. Their soap and protectants have been great for us- and easy way to keep the cars looking nice. One of these days I might get a polisher.

 

I think it's pretty challenging to buff out light scratches by hand. The benefit of a machine is that you can get thousands of passes all while spreading out the force over an area so that you don't over buff a focused area. The last car we traded got a light scratch in it the day before it was being traded, and I picked up a cheap kit at the local auto parts store. It had a light compound and a pad that hooked up to a drill. Not the ideal setup, but I was able to get the scratch out easily. From past experience, I would not have had the same results attempting it by hand- at the very least it would have taken hours to accomplish what I did in 10 minutes.

 

Same thing happened to me three years ago. Picked it up when it was dark three hours away. It was a gloomy and rainy few days after and when the sun finally came out it looked like that washed it with steel wool. I just think they either ran it through their crappy onsite car wash or they hand washed it with worn out equipment. I couldn’t prove anything and didn’t even want the hassle of trying.

 

A pro detailer can polish all of that out. Don’t let the dealer people try to fix it.

 

Every single new vehicle that goes through PDI will have scratches. Only way to get around it is to ask them not to touch anything before delivery. However in your case this is way more than typical. That sucks...

But, as others have pointed out, a good paint correction will fix this up.

 

get those door cup protectors, i dunno wut it is about this paint but 2 years in and it looks like squirrels went at it. got cars more than a decade old that aren't that scuffed up and they went to the same places

 

That sucks on a new truck. After a couple years I tell myself that the paint is there to keep the steel from rusting and that's it. As long as scratches don't go all the way to the substrate, I don't worry too much anymore.

 

I’ve got a Black 2017 and can confirm it scratches if you even look at it the wrong way. It’s the thinest, softest paint ever.

 

I mean... you bought black. Worst color for this reason. Half of that paint damage would most likely be due to the "detailers" at the dealer.

Working at a dealer ill just tell you 90% of the time its some random kit with a spray and a rag cleaning your cars.

Anyways, the majority of that looks like it'll buff out fairly easy. Grab some good product and spend a solid afternoon on it and you'll be good. Just expect more as time goes on with the truck being black.

Ill never buy black ever again.

 

What dealership in MN?

A good friend of mine has been doing paint work on many different autos including exotic types for 20 years. He is the only one I'd ever let near my Tacoma or sports car. I hit a deer in CO last year and the front plastic bumper had to be replaced which is shipped unpainted. He matched it perfectly and also a small portion of the front quarter panel. PM me if you want his # and place of employment (in south metro). He just did a full body of resto on a older Porsche that was incredible upon completion.

Did your truck have any miles on it when you picked it up? As speculated the issues may have occurred from transit protection removal by the nearest door-knob in service at the dealership. Further the dealership may have made a claim with the transport company for the issues and collected on it.
I'd tell the dealership you want if fixed and will be getting estimates for the cost.

 

After I watched a few videos and read your reply, what you said definitely makes sense.sounds like I should pick up a proper buff tool .

 

I think the best advice I can offer if you start using a machine is:

Be patient
Let the machine do the work
Be gentle
Let the machine do the work
Be patient

You'll love the results.
