Nevermind, I searched the forums and answered my own question. The plug is basically useless.

Well, what’s the starting and running wattage for your air compressor?

    BTW Watts=voltage x amperage.

Only aesthetic mods so far Leer 180 cap & Clazzio covers on order.
    Not totally useless.
    - It'll power most charging bricks for tablets or laptops.
    - I successfully used it to power a small coffee maker (2-3 resets on the circuit breaker).
    - It can power 110VAC lighting (400 watts max).
    - Using it will cost you in fuel.
But think about it - at the 400 watt setting it'll provide about 400/110 = slightly more than 3.5 amps.
Apparently some have been able to use it for light power tool tasks (I've never tried).
It's more of a sales gimmick than a useful feature for a contractor or serious DIY person. I did not buy my Taco specifically so I could use the outlet in place of a real generator.

Instead of using the gas station vacuum I use the bed AC plug to power a small effective vacuum that does an good job on the interior of the truck. Also powers a cooler on road trips. Downside is I have the truck running to power both.

So you bought a truck with a 400W outlet and are disappointed that it wouldn’t run a compressor that requires more than 400W. Furthermore, you think it’s useless, despite the fact that it will run anything 400W or less.

Does that sum up this thread pretty well?

That's right, I was disappointed that the truck couldn't do what I thought it could- power the smallest air compressor money can buy. I don't know the draw of all my various tools I plug in. Until now I've never needed to know. Guess I'm going to learn as I attempt to use that outlet.

    Oh look, another mod....
I just tried plugging my house into the bed of my truck and it wouldn't power it!

Fuck this. I'm selling my Tacoma immediately. How dare Toyota not accommodate my outrageous and unrealistic demands!

I use mine to heat a crockpot of soup on low as we drive to my sister's house 60 miles away for a Christmas party. I wrap the crockpot in towels and put it in a cooler plugged in. Keeps it hot for the drive. I've also charged a few power tool batteries. There are hacks that allow it to stay at 400 watts while driving but your stock alternator can't put out enough amps with lights and A/C on to keep up.

I haven't used the bed outlet a single time since installing a hardwired 1200w inverter

Just look at the battery charger and see that the power input is less than 100 watts. My Milwaukee drills charge fine.
