Which oil filters are acceptable for 05 Tacoma?

Hello all,

I am brand new. I have had the prepaid maintenance plan for the past 5 years so i have never changed the oil for my truck until now in a few hours.

I went to Walmart to purchase an oil filter for my 2005 Tacoma 4x2 v6 sr5. Im not much of an enthusiast for cars, so that is all I really know about the type of Tacoma I have.

Anyway...as i was about to change my oil i noticed that the recommended oil filter that the Walmart vehicle accessory prompt computer they have listed that I buy a much small filter than the existing oil filter. I did not notice this until after the fact I drove and went home and opened the hood, my mistake.

The one I got at Walmart was the Fram HM3614. The existing one is a HM 22A22 Toyota Parts (is all i can really see).

So to save a trip back to Walmart, Is it okay, if the oil filter is replaced with a slightly smaller one (the Fram HM3614)?

 

Use the Toyota OEM filter. There's been alot of discussions here on filters and the Frams didn't do to well...

Frams not that great. If you run it, change it out in 3,000 miles.

The Toyota one is good, but the K&N and Mobil 1 (same filters) and Wix/Napa Gold are also very good filters. I think Bosch is the same as the Wix design too, but not 100% sure.

I get my oil change supplies at Autozone where they usually have a 5 qt oil jug of synthetic and a free K&N/M1 filter for under $30

The new Bosch is 'supposedly the best.. this is what ive run since i bought it new, now at 20K.. and i use Valvoline Synpower full synthetic.. i am switching to Mobil in 2K miles! but i will stick with my Bosch!.. oh and as for the K&N... ive heard nothing but bad about it.. and NAPA gold was the best on the market before i heard about the bosch...

You can get the OEM filter from the dealer for around $4-$5. The more you buy, the better the discount. I bought a case & they worked out to I think around $3.50 each. Also buy the plug crush washers.

 

I think I am going to have to go get a box of OEM filters, they seem to be the best quality, and are way cheaper than the mobile 1 filters? D:

 

I went with the OEM filter when I do my oil change

 

I am NEVER going to tell anybody what brand of oil filter I use, but I got 2 years of free service so I will hold my nose when the dealer installs a factory Toyota Filter!

 

The NAPA gold line is made by Wix and uses the same part numbers...I got a Master Pack (case of 12) 1348 filters, will fit the Tacoma and the wife's Jeep Sahara. No more using FRAMs from wally world to avoid making a special trip to the Friendly Local Auto Parts Store (FLAP)...

The big key is keeping the oil clean. If you can read the dipstick through the oil, you should be good.

The oem filters are decent and you can't go wrong using them, but are not the best quality on the market
