The market is down pretty badly this summer, even in the Bay Area. It would be listed for $995K in hopes of getting bid over $1M.

Need some input on my wheels. I have a set of carbon derby rims laced to an i9 torch hub - the front was completely relaced and trued a few months ago due to some user error from the previous owner. However, I keep breaking spokes on the rear wheel. Not doing anything intense when it most recently happened (no hits or off camber landings) and out of no where, heard the familiar metallic pop and then the rattle of the spoke nipple inside the rim well.

I have already replaced two spokes in the span of a couple months, and this will be the third. From what I have read (park tools videos), it sounds like the rule of thumb is three breaks and time to fully replace. How long are people getting on their spokes before completely rebuilding? I bought the rims from a buddy who had them set up around 2016 so they have about 5 seasons on them.

Luckily have another set of wheels that I am using in the mean time; just trying to figure out if this is a normal usable life of the spokes or something needs to be further investigated.

Has the tension on the spokes been checked?

Tough to go by seasons. Mileage can differ a ton between riders. What may be five seasons of use for one is a summer's use for others.

My teammate and I ride the same wheels on our mountain bikes and gravel bikes. He breaks spokes routinely....i haven't broken a spoke, outside of a big, crash in twenty years.

So it depends on the rider.

I'd definitely have a shop check for even tension on the wheels as a first step. For what it's worth though I'd get all new spokes and call it a day as long as the rim is still good.

I had the rear wheel trued when the front was relaced (spoke tension adjusted). Leaning towards having all new spokes put on before I cause a bigger problem in an effort to not spend unnecessary money.

Was the tension actually checked with a gauge though? Lots of shops I've been in will "re-tension" but may not know what that tension is or if it is relatively even or not.

Some mechanics can probably build a fine wheel without a guage but, in my experience, the best are ones that actually use a guage. It takes longer but it makes a better wheel.

Unfortunately your guess may be as good as mine at this point. Would love to be able to do it myself - working on being as self sufficient as possible with my bike maintenance and repair - but the entry ticket to be able to tune and true wheels is a bit steep.

my pad seems to hold the bike just fine usually. I usually have problems when I load up the pad with like 5-6 bikes. There SOMETIEMS is a little bit of interference between frames or between pedals/frames. I have thought about using a 2 by to make a little slot for each back wheel to slot into and let the whole piece of wood slot into the 2by slot in our wheel arches in the bed. But, haven't really gotten to it.

Well.... Participated in the Big Mountain Enduro race in Brian Head, UT this past weekend. 2 days. 7 stages. BRUTAL uphill climbing.

Day 1 was 2 backcountry stages. Really fun, really rowdy. and it included some demoralizing uphills. I don't think I've ever been so spent and ever walked so much up a mountain. Then a wild storm appeared! I used "huddle under tree" and "put on rain jacket" but both were ineffective to protect from the "hailstorm" that mother nature threw at us. It hurt.

Then there was still one more very serious trail to go down in the resort as a final stage to get to the resort base. I was legitimately scared I would get hurt because I was so spent.

Day 2 was 4 stages of park riding.... if you don't know Brian Head, all you need to know is that there really isn't much dirt. Just a lot of rocks and shale. REALLY fun stages. 1 uphill climb and then the rest was lift served. I was feeling REALLY good on all the stages I had been doing.

    Screen Shot 2022-08-28 at 10.38.50 PM.jpg

But, Brian Head claims another victim...final stage, just as I drop in, something eitehr hit my derailleur into my spokes or it went with the derailleur into my spokes. broke 4 of them, bent 2 more, destroyed my derailleur, flatted my tire. Race...finished. I was fortuante enough to just simply walk back up to the start (off course, obviously) and just take the lift down. That was fun.

    PXL_20220828_185233180.jpg

Was still fun. I would still do it again. I have a bone to pick with that stage next year.

Maintenance is cheap. A good manual gauge from Park (TM-1) isn't expensive, nor is a nipple wrench. Under $100, 10 minutes of your time every 500 miles or so, and wheels can stay in good shape for a long time.
You can also true up wheels and replace a broke spoke or two with that, just use the zip-tie method. I will say that truing can get tricky, but there are a ton of online tutorials that will help with it. I found the "GT Method" works pretty well for me.

Yeah. I was perfectly fine. No injuries. The only "injury" was from my pedal while i was walking and it scratched my calf. All things considered, I did just fine. hah!

Thanks! It was pretty epic and pretty type2 fun but it was also fun to just have the park to ourselves. Mostly. There were some idiot spectators here and there but they were quick to get out of the way.

Brian Head takes no prisoners. I love visiting there.

The weather gets insane though. I did the Utah Gravity Series race there a few years ago about this same weekend and it snowed on us at the top waiting for the drop in after pouring rain all day.

    Seen here: Remarkably little dirt
