Good question. The lid for it is above the headlights but still I would think it would be sealed tight for rain and deeper water.

Funny, was out getting the mail, and the neighbor down the street stopped and asked if I wanted to sell one of my old vehicles. Maybe it is a sign

Sure it does. It also means that what you see isn’t everything.

The tub in the frunk is a 1 piece mold kind of like a cooler. It has a drain plug so technically water can go in through there. The top of the frunk has a rubber seal that sits against the inside of the hood. The hood itself has it's own rubber seal along the edges. It's pretty waterproof I would think.

I assume you are talking about the hybrid system being more complex with more things to break. I don't disagree with you; all I can say is my wife's 2012 Prius V has been a tank. 130k and never a single issue. It is dead nuts reliable and she is hard on it.

I was pretty anti-hybrid because of the more complex system, but we got the car for free a few years ago with 80k from the in laws, so wasn't going to turn that down. Through our time with it, my perception of hybrid reliability has completely changed (Toyota hybrids, at least).

Toyota has more hybrids on the planet than any other Mfg. I"ve never even heard about a major issue or recall for a Toyota hybrid. But there could be some. BUt I guess an extended warranty could be had for it for peace of mind.

There’s a lot more parts to potentially break and it’s also less likely to be something you can fix yourself. The RAV4 Primes are currently having corrosion issues with the cables going to the rear wheels. It sounds like Toyota is doing nothing about it yet.

JUst those out of 15 million global hybrid sales since 1997 isn't a bad record.

That sucks. I guess there are some teething issues with newer chassis. I definitely agree with you; I am not touching any of the high voltage stuff. Luckily, I haven't had to.

We looked around some Prius forums a while ago. There didn't seem to be any chronic issues that weren't related to neglect, like never changing the trans axle fluid and being surprised when it lets go. Plenty of people were seeing 300-400k with no issues. From what I understand, the nickel metal hydride batteries can withstand a lot more cycles then lithium, tho they hold less charge. A new battery pack was like $1700 last we checked. Hopefully they will get the Rav sorted out and give it a similar track record.

None of Toyota’s other hybrids have ever broken?

You’ll never have to wonder who made it, that’s for sure. Capability wise, squared off walls for interior volume and high ground clearance with a flat belly pan aren’t bad things to have.
