Don't confuse wild brush bunnies with domestic escapees.

    *********************

Still PISSED. Picked a large watermelon with all the signs of being ripe. Nope. I swear!

It is actually edible. But another few days to a week. After all that. Big fail!! But there are still 5 or 6 big ones left....

Don't you wait until the veins connect on a few lines and then it's time to pick?

What signs did you use? Yellow bottom, hollow sound and brown dried tendril all the way to the main vine?

    *edit
And when I say tendril is dry. I mean the one closest to the fruit is entirely dry. This one shows a example of one that is drying but not fully dry. It will be fully dry in another 1-3 days for me. A21B28ED-7FD1-4D66-AE2E-2E528432F523.jpg

    Exactly that.
I thought that the tendril just needed to be about like that! Ooops

This is the breed that we have living in the wild, here. If there's anything different breed it must be an escape.

    How big does watermelon get?

My neighbor's watermelon that escaped into my yard was half the size of the picture shown. When they came over to pick it off the vine.

those were crimson, i believe. they get pretty big; upwards of 20- 25 lbs.
    it depends on the variety.
some varieties are bred smaller as ‘lunchbox’ and are the size of a bowling ball

Mine the past few years are small because we don't need a lot of 15+pound watermelons; 1-4lbs is a nice size for us.

We have been having great fun with this variety, the rhine is almost edible. https://www.rareseeds.com/kaho-watermelon

Can you pick watermelon at any size or you have to wait for it to fully ripen?
