If I understand your question correctly, you are asking if there's a possibility the ECU reverts it's programming to something other than what we've designed. Is that correct?

If that's the case, there's no chance the tune will revert or erase itself without someone else reflashing the ECU with different programming. These ECU's do have adaptive logic and the ability to learn/trim specific things. But the base tuning will always be a constant. The ignition timing we program may vary slightly due to the knock control strategy Toyota employs. The fueling may vary slightly due to fuel trimming for things such as changing engine tolerances, ethanol content of the fuel, and other external factors, but all of the base programming will be constant.

If I was off base let me know and we can circle back. :)

I'm in touch with Allan from NJ regarding my tune.

He has text me (in the past) when he comes down to northern Delaware for a meet up.

My driving adjustments/throttle control are minimal...it keeps me honest at the moment. lol

But when I do need the acceleration, I put the throttle to the floor and watch those RPMs! (Evil Laugh Ensues!) lol

Correct. You answered my question I think! Lets see if I understand you now . So there is a constant base line, and the tune would be the programming you add on top of the base line? Lamens terms of course. Not trying to take anything away from the design.
Does ignition timings etc have provisions for when under heavy load (tow) or is it same same whilst towing?
I ask only because my butt dyno and right foot tell me that toyota seems to understand that at least from the factory because my 2016 MT doesn't lug or chug in lower RPM and when towing 3500++. It's actually nice lol. I swear it knows!
Done alot of reading on here over the years on the MT and some will say it's the Atkinson Cycle BS that is causing the initial hesitation or lugging during MT shifts. Unless you are hammering on it.

This must be the reason, with every tune I’ve had (quite a few versions and updates over the last few years), they seem to start out super impressive, but then a month or two in it always seems to ‘degrade’. It doesn’t go back to pre-tune behavior, but the smoothness and punch that I get when I first get a flash seems to fade with time. Logically I know the programming doesn’t ‘go away’ but something is making it change with time, it must be all of these OEM adaptive measures that cause it.

Good! Just want to make sure you're taken care of. :)

Sort of correct. There is a constant baseline, but the tuning we do is not "on top of" the baseline. We rewrite the baseline to our specific values which are largely derived from OEM values. Just massaged where we felt necessary. So think of it as an "enhanced" OEM mapping. The factory mapping strategy working in combination with the adaptive knock strategy gives the truck a range of ignition timing it can run for any given RPM/Load. The system is very dynamic in that it's always adjusting to find the optimal setting within the allowable range. Things like towing heavy loads, changes in fuel quality/ethanol content, heat saturation, among many other variables can affect where in that range the truck will run.

In your specific question about towing, there's not a towing specific timing map per say, but towing will likely put the truck into areas of the ignition map it may not see during normal operation/day-to-day use. These areas are specifically mapped according to the conditions the engine sees during that RPM/Load and with input from the knock control system, the truck will be able to calculate what the optimum advance should be. So in a sense it can run different ignition advance values while towing compared to normal driving, but it's not because the ECU knows it's towing a load, it's working within the defined parameters of existing mapping based off the sensor inputs it's receiving from the engine.

The example of your MT towing the 3500+ load at lower RPM is a good example. In this instance you're going to see much higher engine load in the manual than you would in an auto in this scenario. The load on the engine puts the engine in a state where it can produce more torque than it could at lower load. As you mentioned it's very much due to the Atkinson Cycle operation during low RPM/Load conditions. So you're spot on there.

It's possible. Before I pass that buck on that, I'd like to have you perform a reset of the adaptives. I can't promise it'll resolve the issue but we've had a few who were tuned previously find the truck ran better after the reset and allowed the system to relearn on the OTT flash. It seems the different methods we all employ in tuning can sometimes create some havoc in the system when switching from one tuning method to another.

    Keep me posted.

Is the best place to find a local tuner in the B /S / T section? Would love to get tuned in Birmingham when I pass through this winter but would like the tune sooner and I am in WY currently. Any suggestions on the best place to find a local tuner for OTT?

I'd recommend checking out our interactive map that has the locations and servicing areas of each of our authorized tuners. It can be found here: https://overlandtailor.com/remote-tuning

We can get you taken care of in WY or in AL depending on your timelines. Either way we're happy to help out!

    @JustDSM

I'm avoiding the "switch" between tunes simply for the reason you stated about the "havoc" it can create.

From the narrative you replied to stealthmode, the dynamics happening between load scenarios is amazing!

I appreciate the current OTT 8.0 Tune (2nd tune & 1st update) and will stick with it throughout the life of my DCSB/AT Sport.

**Little off-topic fun for those who may be into the moto community**

If there's one thing you should know about OTT is we love tuning! While the Toyota platforms is what we're here for, this is a little behind the scenes look at what we do when we're not working.

After fitting my 2021 KTM 500 EXC with a few bolt-on modifications and fitting a fully programmable standalone ECU to the bike, it was to be a fun day on the dyno getting the bike dialed in and ready for some dual sport adventures.

    271975277_10223372389311045_5804392872400301594_n.jpg

For those curious, the bike was fitted with a Euro specification airboot that eliminates the reed valves in the OEM boot and the endcap of the factory muffler was replaced to eliminate the necked down/choked exhaust. Aside from that the only other modification was a GET RX1 ECU w/ the GET LC1 wideband. This setup allows for closed loop fueling correction well beyond the capability of the OE ECU w/ the narrowband O2.

Thanks to Tucker Speed here in Ogden, UT for the use of their dyno. Always great to work with knowledgeable professionals.

Got the bike strapped in got to work. The GET ECU uses a programing software called Maya. Massive map resolution and access to every map made dialing in this bike a bit more work than the typical Toyota we do daily.

Fuel Map. (Inj PW in μs)

    KTMFuel1.jpg

Working with a DynoJet 250i dyno and it's Eddy Current load cell, each throttle angle was independently mapped to ensure fueling and output were optimized. Spending the time to ensure every RPM/Throttle angle was mapped to perfection made for a tremendous improvement in how the bike feels. Not something we were able to determine while strapped down, aside from the crisp and immediate response you could feel as the engine responded to throttle inputs; that was quite evident.

Some of our data analysis during the session:
    288653036_10224166838051767_6098258986181226266_n.jpg

    288655918_10224166814211171_6754953984824600125_n.jpg

Unfortunately I didn't bring the stock ECU with me to do a true before/after, but I did spend a a good amount of time riding with my laptop in a backpack datalogging (LOL) refining my base map before the dyno session. We got things pretty spot on, and with the mild state of tune the bike was in there wasn't a whole lot to be gained. However, other sources have dyno'd stock 500's and we were able to make some significant improvements with some basic airflow mods and a tune.

    Cycle World dyno results:

OTT's base map vs a custom tune:
    KTMDyno.jpg

On the trail the bike is SILKY smooth through the entire throttle and RPM range. The tractability of the bike is unreal with and the throttle literally feels connected to the engine. It's really hard to describe. Even being a cable driven throttle body with no electronic TB mapping that can mask the true character of the engine, this thing feels like a sewing machine. More throttle and the bike just smoothly and predictably accelerates. Very rewarding. Couldn't be happier..

Wanted to give a quick shout-out to OTT for the great Tune and Jonh at Kelly Tuning LLC in ABQ, Nm for hooking up the flash today. Great service, Highly Recommend both! It was clear on the drive home that there existed a very noticeable increase in torque, especially noticeable down low and with in-town driving, real test will be when I tow my teardrop tomorrow for our labor day camping trip, more to follow.....

Are there any other Tuners in the TriState(PA/DE/NJ) area other than Alan(MasterYota)? Not sure what is going on but its just impossible to set something up with him for months now and I really would like to get the update we spoke about, months ago....

I'm not sure if there are personal things going on or whatever but I am just frustrated at this point and if that's the case I just wish someone would communicate that to me.

    Anyone else having issues?

Craig I called you and messaged you. It went as green text as opposed to iMessage, not sure if there’s something with your phone. Last time we spoke, and isolated your surging issue stemming from wiring your raptor lights to the injector fuse, I asked you to call me if you need anything. I have not gotten any calls from you… sending you a PM as well.

A big thank you to @RCTuningFL and OTT! Great person to work with if on the east coast of FL.
Running OTT for 4 months and over 10k miles. Great tune and still as much fun to drive after 10k miles as it was in the first 10.
    Recently switched from 7.0 to 8.0 w/AGM (mild/medium, 4.88 gears)
Ample power in the 2.5 to 3.5k rpm range and ZERO gear hunting.
I can't count how many downshifts I have saved, but my transmission also thanks you!
A surprise bonus has been the fuel economy which is very close to where it was when stock.
Since installing 7.0 in May, I have consistently been in the 18.5 to 19mpg range under all types of driving conditions with ~21 or better at 70 on highway.
A solid balance of performance and efficiency in all driving conditions makes OTT a worthy investment.

Birmingham is a bit a drive for me. Do you have anyone here that comes through Georgia? I just got 4.88 gears and they are great at keep 6th gear on the interstate, but still having to push the pedal down more than I like to going up a hill or passing a car. Almost like a dead pedal feeling.
